Bug Description

When using MS Word inside VirtualBox, Word (and sometimes even the whole system) freezes.

All is fine again after resizing the guest window.

Did you install virtualbox from the ubuntu repositories? Or from the virtualbox website? And which version of ubuntu are you running?

I believe i can confirm this on Hardy with Virtualbox 1.5.6. I don't use MS Word myself, but Adobe Photoshop CS3 exhibits similar behaviour. Usually the window in question whitens out and displays a "not responding" text, though i can 'revive' it by opening a new Windows Explorer instance. In rare cases (about 1 in 10), resizing the guest window brings it back online.

I am using Shared Folders on the Hardy host which i think might have a role in the time out / not responding.

I experience the same and it doesn't depend on the program. The whole Windows display just freezes (sometimes it's a 2/3 screen wide horizontal bar in the middle that gets frozen or smth) and doesn't unfreeze until I resize the window.

I'm using a Core2Duo with GM965 chipset and X3100 graphics accelerator.

An by the way, I use version 2.0.2 of virtualbox-ose from the Intrepid repository.

same behaviour using virtualbox 2.02 PUEL (not virtualbox-ose) on Intrepid as well as on Hardy.
I'm using Dual Display and also GM965 chipset and X3100 graphics accelerator

As a temporary solution, executing following command in a shell window de-freeezes the virtualbox-window:
(I have not even to restart virtualbox)

$ xrandr

Closing as "Fix Released", since it works for the original reporter.
If there's still a problem for others (in the most recent Ubuntu version), please re-open.

Changed in virtualbox-ose:
importance: Undecided → Medium
status: Incomplete → Fix Released
