Bug Description

Binary package hint: gparted

GParted is very feature poor according to its Features dialog: e.g. it can't create xfs or ntfs partitions.

gparted version 0.3.3-2ubuntu6.1. (in Gutsy's repository).

Even version 0.1 of gparted (that is available for Dapper) can handle ntfs and xfs better according to its respectice dialog.

This bug is still valid in Ubuntu 8.10 64-Bit with the GParted 0.3.8 that ships with it. Is this due to legal issues?

Several (optional) packages provide support for file systems not included in libparted.

For example, the ntfsprogs package provides the commands necessary to work with the NTFS file system. If ntfsprogs is installed, then GParted will use it. You can view which packages are required to support a specific file system within GParted using "View -> File System Support".

Alternatively, you can view the required software online at:
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/features.php

The gparted on other distros doesn't seem to have these problems, even the same version numbers or earlier all seem to be fine but Ubuntu's one seems broken somehow. I usually have ntfsprogs but still have problems, at least with the Ubuntu one

Forcing everybody to install the tools for every filesystem imaginable isn't a good idea of course, but maybe promoting these tools from 'suggested' to 'recommended' would be useful.

OTOH, in Debian they just recently moved some tools from recommended to suggested:

What do you people think?
Might be useful to discuss this with the Debian maintainer too?

Closing since yes, we don't want to force everyone to install the tools for every filesystem under the sun.
