Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

I was just trying to paste some files in an ftp folder with nautilus.
I was able to copy (I could see the sentence explaining that the file had been copied at the bottom of nautilus) but paste was impossible.
I tried with local files and got the same issue.
IO tried to kill nautilus but it didn't change anything.
I had to restart X for it to work again.

I am using gusty wich is supposed to be stable but I think that this kinf of bug is really very bad for ubuntu's reputation and I would like to help you as much as possible for it not to happen again.

Tell me what to send you, I don't have any idea

Thx

I'm not sure if this is Nautilus' fault, but it happens to me with Firefox and OpenOffice, although it could be any program.

If I copy a sentence from Firefox, then close Firefox and then try to paste the sentence into OpenOffice, I can't as the sentence has been purged.

I've been told I need 'glipper' to keep track of my coping and pasting, but I don't understand why I need an external program to handle my "clipboard".

Is this a known feature missing from Nautilus or is it supposed to be there? Yes, this sometimes happens to me with Nautilus too. Seems like that 'select the word to copy it and then middle click to paste it' messes up with ctrl + c and ctrl +v.

I've used glipper and it works. It's installed by default in Foresight Linux (Gnome 2.20). It's a well-known issue that closing an application will normally wipe any clipboards associated with that application. It's a habit to close an application once you grab the data that you want to paste. Then poof! It's gone when you try to paste it. Why glipper is not installed by default in Ubuntu is beyond imagination.

Marking as incomplete until reporter can post a more specific use case. I could not figure out the replication from the post.

Marking as Confirmed. In Gutsy, copy a column of data from gnumeric. Close gnumeric then try to paste in gedit. Gone. No data to paste.

Work around:

>sudo apt-get install glipper

One less annoyance. Glipper should be installed by default in Hardy. Any reason why it's not?

The nautilus and other software issues are different bugs. Could you describe easy steps to trigger the bug? What error do you get when trying to copy something?
