Bug Description

The live session shutdown prompt that tells you to remove the installation media and press ENTER is missing. The spinner just keeps spinning.

This seems to be a new problem since plymouth 0.9.5git20210406-0ubuntu1 was introduced to the ISO.

Workaround:

Press Enter to shut down. It still works.

It appears casper-stop is still running as intended because this appears on tty1 (VT1):

  Please remove the installation medium, then reboot.

So that means /bin/plymouth is executable and was successfully pinged. It just failed to respond to:

  chvt 63
  plymouth message --text="$MSG"

Maybe with the new forking logic we're talking to the wrong instance?

Alright I think I've got a fix/workaround but will wait and see if upstream has a better idea first: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/plymouth/plymouth/-/issues/152

---------------
plymouth (0.9.5git20210406-0ubuntu2) impish; urgency=medium

  * Add plymouth-switch-root-initramfs-Preload-text-renderin.patch to
    preload all the graphics libraries required by plymouthd before the
    switch occurs. So now casper can render text even from within the
    initramfs regardless of library dependencies (LP: #1942987).

In comment #9 you verified that it was fixed with "Ubuntu Impish daily" but in comment #11 you are testing "Xubuntu Beta release". Did you previously verify that this was fixed on Xubuntu? I ask as its possible something other than (or in addition to) plymouth is causing the issue on Xubuntu.

@brian-murray

Yes I did verify that it was/is fixed in Ubuntu and it is - I tested Ubuntu again today - and no I never confirmed "officially" that Xubuntu was fixed.

As noted in comment # 11 Xubuntu has the issue - I also just tested Ubuntu Mate's latest ISO 2021-09-21 and the issue is just a bit different - there is no prompt to remove media after clicking the restart button - however the system reboots at once.

Yes I think that something other than plymouth might be causing the problem.

Again this does not occur in Kubuntu,Lubuntu or Ubuntu I have tested all their beta images today.

On Xubuntu, the issue seems to be inconsistent. I've observed two different phenomena:

1. Only the Xubuntu logo is displayed. Nothing else happens.
2. Xubuntu logo, spinner, and message are all correctly displayed.
