Bug Description

Running Gutsy, performed 3 updates installed tonight

libcdio6_0.76-1ubuntu2.7.10.1_i386.deb
libpcre3_7.4-0ubuntu0.7.10.2_i386.deb
libpcrecpp0_7.4-0ubuntu0.7.10.2_i386.deb

Random freezing of system after update, rebooted several times with same, sometimes freezing at boot stage, sometimes a few minutes into desktop. Tried restarting in recovery mode, boot up hanging at following stage (several times)

ata1: timeout waiting for ADMA IDLE, stat=0x440
ata1: timeout waiting for ADMA LEGACY, stat=0x440
ata1.00: exception Emask 0x1 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x100000 action 0x2
ata1.00: (CPB resp_flags 0x11: CMD error)

Looked at other bug reports for 'exception Emask' it seemed that ATA interfaces have been implicated - tried adding 'combined_mode=libata' to kernel boot with no success. Decided to unplug CD drive IDE ribbon from motherboard - no more freezing! Am guessing its libcdio6...

Bug fixed, but no CD drive...

Just an update, OS is up and running with CD drive plugged in and working.

I had restarted it once without drive plugged in - system worked fine. Restarted with drive plugged in - and no problems(!) Have attached another dmesg for comparison (dont know if would help...)
