samba crashes on startup without ever showing up on the screen

3. samba 3.0.28-lubuntu3
4. tried to start program from menu, expecting to see the gui for samba
5. the program started to boot, did see the "starting samba" down on the panel, but it dident show up on the desktop, and then i got a crashreport.
