Ubuntu hangs - open apps still function, but nothing new can be started - forced hard restart

Bug Description

I will explain this the best I can. At random times, most things stop working. I cannot open anything new, either from inside gnome, or the console. Things that are open continue to work, but with limited functionality (if they call on anything else, like a save box, it will fail). I cannot shutdown the machine because it ill just hang. Gnome shuts down, but once it comes to actually shutting the underlying OS down, everything just stops. I replaced networkmanager with WICD due to some advice, but that only reduced the frequency of the hangs. This problem has been discussed in the forums (link below) but no solution has been forthcoming. I am not the only one to experience this, and I have experienced this problem on two laptops, running both feisty and gutsy, one with Nvidia and one with ATI.

I am fairly new to ubuntu, and linux in general, so if more info is requested, please include quick instructions on how to gather it. This problem is experienced by others, is longstanding, and makes Ubuntu very unusable on an important machine.

thanks for reporting! but since this bug has been reported a while ago
and not been touched since i dare to ask if it still is a problem. if it
still is, please file it against a specific package so the relevant
people will have a look at it...

Yes this is still a problem. I have experienced it only during the use
of the terminal server client. If left for a time due to activities
around the office the workstation will stop responding to mouse input.
This has the effect of you being forced into a restart situation from
the power switch as the keyboard input will only access minor
functions.

The nett result of this has been to keep the Ubuntu workstation
relegated to minor play and experimentation functions only. Sad really
as Ubuntu seemed to have a lot of promise.

Thank you for the question.

Regards,
Peter.

without a relevant package specified it is unlikely some relevant dev/maintainer will have a look at this...
can you somehow narrow down the problem and/or specify some package?
