Bug Description

Hi,

My system crashes randomly and I can't find the source of the problem.
It can crash 5 times in one hour or not in one day.
What I mean by "crash" is that my screen switches to off,
CTRL+ALT+F1/Backslash... don't work,
my musicplayerdaemon stops (so I don't think it's just a X crash).
It happened once just after gdm login screen, at gnome boot.
I can't afford to repeat the crash by my actions.
I checked /var/log/* but there's no events logged at the crash time.
I don't think it's a hardware problem because I run other partitions/OS
without crashing.
Please help, I'm lost :s

My cfg :
Gigabyte P35-DS3R
ASUS EN8800GT
Quad6600
GSkill 4Go MQ

I was crashing a lot with flashplugin-nonfree and npviewier.bin so I've desinstalled it and see if it continues to crash...

Well, 4 days without any crash, I think it's related to flashplugin-nonfree so...
When I say "related" I mean the problem source is maybe not this flash plugin but something appening when it runs...
I may reinstall it check if crashes continues or if it was another thing ...
They if it's related to flashplugin I don't know how I'll be able to trace the problem because the crash is enough hard
to unable the computer to flush log into disk.

Ok, well after other tests, It's certainly not flashplugin-nonfree, It crashes without the package installed...
I really don't know how can I find the problem because when It crash I can't do anything else than manual reboot,
I have no information printed on the screen because it's black and off, I can't access to my computer via ssh,
It's a nice hard lock up :)
And it happens so randomly that I don't have a damn clue where can I dig ...

Unfortunately, I cannot identify the problem.

Removed flashplugin-nonfree as the affected package.

Have same issue, but my OS is Ubuntu 7.10 x86

my configuration:
ga-p35-ds3r
asus 8600gts
core 2 duo 8200

Sometimes in 2-4 days my computer crashes, monitor turns off, but keyboard and mouse continue to "shine" but don't react on any actions. Right after crash computer checks cdroms like during post.

I cannot find any problems in logs.

I don't what I did, but my computer doesn't crash anymore...
It could be dist-upgrade that fix the problem or maybe the motherboard bios updating from F10 to F11 or unknown stuff.

At last I've managed to know what my problem is. My problem is concerned with IPOD SHUFFLE + USB (it's not the problem of ubuntu, I have exactly the same behaivior in Windows).

Sometime when connecting ipod shuffle with pc (it's using the same headphone jack for usb connection) it's easy to touch first contact of ipod with first contact of ipod's headphone like connector for usb at this moment system crashes.

I thinck it's motherboard model hardware problem.

To solve problem: first connect ipod to headphone like connector, then connect usb connector to usb port. I'll try also to buy card with additional usb ports.

i am closing this bug as this seems to be no ubuntu driver/software-specific problem but a hardware problem. feel free to reopen this bug or a new one if you experience problems!
