Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
xserver-xorg-video-unichrome: Depends: xserver-xorg-core (>= 1:1.1.1) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

Yep, simple to fix, but the real question is why don't you use the default which is -openchrome? We might drop -unichrome..

Hmm, maybe it's better now but I tried on gutsy about a month ago on
some core2duo motherboard with onboard via graphics and it was
painful.

The xorg CPU utilization was at 100% from doing simple things like
opening a firefox tab. The second I installed unichrome the problem
went away - straight away got xv acceleration, very low CPU
utilization, etc.

I have Fujitsu-Siemens AmiloPro V2030 (with UniChrome) and there is no way to configure it to use 1024x768 resolution using vesa or openchrome.

As far as I remember in Ubuntu 7.04 I had to manual edit settings for X to get it work, but it was okej, for now it isn't.

Package xserver-xorg-video-unichrome ask for xserver-xorg-core >= 1:1.1.1, please fix it.

There in no way to use Ubuntu in resolution less than 1024x768, most window are too big to use it, there is no way to put them beside visible area (You can push it to right or left, but can't push it out desktop to top or bottom, so in most cases there is no way to accept some changes). Also using some other aplications is not easy, when You can't see any web page without scrolling it...

I'm not sure why it is happening, under Microsoft Windows I do not have any problems with this graphic card, I even can play 3D games in 1024x768.

I noticed that the importance of this bug is "undecided". Check the number of posts on openchrome screen resolution problems in the Ubuntu Forums. It's definitely a problem.

The openchrome driver in 7.10 worked fine. The openchrome driver in 8.04 is broken. .

I will gladly provide any information about my hardware and xorg configuration to anyone who is willing to look into it. For starters:

G'day Hackeron,

Could you please confirm for me whether or not you had the following problem while attempting to install xserver-xorg-unichrome?

When you select the package for installation in Synaptic, it says that it much remove a long list of packages, including ubuntu-desktop, xserver-xorg, xserver-xorg-core as well as all packages dependent on xserver-xorg-core?

I'm going to try repackaging it from source myself.

Note to Tim Aaltonen - I have tried the openchrome package on several systems and never had any success with it. The Unichrome package has been very good however.

Hi all,

I'm new to launchpad and have just registered to be able to post this comment.

I've been using XUbuntu for about a year without any problems on a Cadar-Minibox-200 (http://www.cadar.co.uk/boxpcs/minibox200.php) which has:
Graphics: Integrated VIA Unichrome 2D/3D.
My hard disk crashed last week and I had to buy a new one and reinstall everthing (nothing to do with XUbuntu, this is just to put things in context).
So I decided to install the new Hardy Heron LTS which I believed would be better than the previous Feisty Fawn.
Big mistake of mine, Hardy Heron has this bug that you guys are discussing above and I could not manage to configure my monitor to 1024x768.
I'm having exactly the same problem mentioned above (see below) and after spending the last 2 days trying to get around this I give up.
Because, as someone mentioned above, it's not possible to work with hardy heron with low resolution.
I 'm unfortunately about to change my linux distro to something else than Ubuntu unless I can sort this out soon.
So I wonder if anyone knows any work around this problem (Openchrome does not work on this case) and/or have any plan to urgently fix this bug on ubuntu.

Any suggestion is very much appreciated!!
Thanks in advance.
Roney

G'day Roney,

I haven't been able to do much towards fixing this problem yet. Have you tried using the Gutsy version of the driver? Download it from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/gutsy/i386/xserver-xorg-video-unichrome.

Please post results.

Many thanks,

This is also a problem for me, as I have recently bought an EX10000 to use as a mythtv front end, however the openchrome drivers do not appear to support hardware MPEG2 decoding.

Thanks for the suggestion Dov, but I'm afraid it did not work. I had the same error messages trying to install it.

But after searching again for Via drivers for linux I found this (see link below) which works let's say 99.9%...

http://linux.via.com.tw/support/downloadFiles.action

After installing the driver above and rebooting my machine, it started with the screen resolution of 1024x768, just what I wanted!!

Great, except for one thing: the login screen is now gigantic (about 4 times the size of the screen) and I can't see the field to type the username and pwd. But it works when I 'blindly' enter my login.

So, I'm now searching for a solution to this gigantic login screen... Anyone, any ideas please?

Roney

The very strange thing is that the gutsy package is the same as that released with Gutsy, which worked very well, but it won't work with Hardy... Very suspicious.

I'm going to try building a package from the source at the developers page. Give me a few days, I'm pretty busy atm. (Why oh why do they get me to work fixing windows pc's... gahh!)

Thanks. I've also downloaded a deb from Edgy. It was the only older version .deb I could find. I'll try that out as well.

I'll also try the package from via itself. See what it does on my machines.

I'm wondering how come this hasn't been fixed yet? I've just bought a new box with a Via Unichrome Pro 2 (CX700M2) which isn't supported by OpenChrome so graphics are painfully slow. I'd like to give the UniChrome package a go, but I get the same error as someone reported here 5 months ago now!
