When exactly does this happen? (step-by-step howto if possible)
Can you aggregate some information on the file? Does this happen for all mp4s, or only one? If it is free content, can I download it somewhere?

This same problem occurs for me with any media file, including ogg vorbis/theora files. I tried replacing the .desktop file with the one from the KDE SVN revision Harald linked to, and KDE4 still complains that the file is malformatted if I right-click on a .ogg file, click Open With > Other... and select Dragon Player. Is the fix committed to the development branch different?

I guess I should have actually tried different file types. I can open .avi files by going to Open With > Dragon Player, but if I try to open the same file using Open With > Other..., it complains about the .desktop file. Perhaps KDE4 is using dragonplayer_part.desktop when it should be using dragonplayer.desktop?
