Thanks for your bug submission. When you have a new installation, there are several databases that get created. This can take a long time. It's possible that your machine froze because of this activity. The rt in the kernel means real-time so it devotes less time to mouse and keyboard interrupts.

It would help to open a terminal and run top. Watch the CPU activity. Also add a CPU monitor to your panel--Right-Click--Add on the panel. See if the keyboard freeze is linked to 100% CPU usage. Also note what program is running and eating up your CPU.

Marking as incomplete pending more information.

keyboard freeze for any cpu usage

Marked as Confirmed. Hardy is supposed to have a tickless kernel. I don't know if that is having an impact with your laptop. When your keyboard is frozen, how do you shutdown? If you have access to another computer, install openssh-server and login via ssh so you have a remote connection to your laptop from another machine. Then when you keyboard freezes, go to the remote machine and examine the some log files.

Install openssh-server: (laptop)

>sudo apt-get install openssh-server

On the remote machine

>ssh graymalkin@gramalkin-laptop

or

>ssh graymalkin@192.168.1.10 (whatever your IP address for the laptop is: ifconfig to find out)

Use this remote terminal to examine messages

>dmesg | tail

Look for errors in mouse or keyboard or I/O or network.

To shut down the laptop remotely (you want to avoid using the power button to shutdown if possible)

>sudo poweroff

This will help narrow down what is going on.

Well, it looks like a touchpad problem. I can't tell if the touchpad has crapped out, or gotten wet--any spilled drinks? Sometimes the ribbon cable to the touchpad gets loose.

Grab yourself a USB mouse and plug that in and see if you can regain control. Try turning off the touchpad in BIOS.

It's possible that the real-time kernel is not happy with the touchpad driver. This would be a bug.

A work-around is to try a regular kernel version of Ubuntu. You want something that says x686 or generic. Is there a reason you need real-time on a laptop?

You can select a different mouse driver in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Hi, I have the same problem with that, and Im not playing music while this happends, it just happens a few minutes after turning on the computer.

Also you may note that this ONLY happends to me when Im running on battery, I have to plug-in to avoid this issue. I didn't have this problem with any other version, or distro, and I must tell you that this ir REALL annoying !

Please if you have a work around to fix this, let me know, I'm not the only one with this problem, my co-workers (same laptoc) have the same problem.

Thanks.

I have the same problem... 2 weeks into a fresh install of 7.10. Just 30 minutes ago it started to freeze and had to shutdown using the power button. I'm running ubuntu on a HP Compaq nx7300.

The first 2 times I had managed to start up a rhythmbox instance, but the 3rd time i only got a browser up, then all input was lost, except the hardware keys (poweroff, wireless, sleep, volume controls and display brightness). Oh and it happened on battery power and AC power, but it seems that if I start the session on AC and never plug it off, I manage to have control long enough to post yet another pointless bug report to the ubuntu community.

Losing control of your machine is pretty far removed from the ubuntu phylosophy, and I'd rank this as a critical bug, so ... I assume it'll get fixed in ubuntu version 9.06, looking at previous response times.

Hi, I just made a fresh install on my laptoc. I installed Hardy and I keep having the same problem:
Note this:
1. The problem is only present when I power on my laptoc WITHOUT AC power
2. The computer is still "alive", it works, but I cant control it, I have to install a sshserver to reboot it from a remote session.
3. Some times I power on without it and then plug the AC into it, and a few moments later the mouse and keyboard freezes while my computer is still working.
3. Windows does NOT HAVE THIS ISSUE, nor somehing like it, so DONT THINK WINDOWS IS SO BAD AND LINUX SO GREAT, even so, look that this bug is not even considered as Important, or something like it, so like I isume, this will be around for some time, untill a debian communitie guy MAY give a workaround.

4. My last, for what I see within launchpad, UbuntuBrainstorm, not much is changing, not only they are not implementing ANY of the ideas people submits to Brainstorming List, but they also implement onces that people didnt ask much, and also they do not correct bugs like this, they only focus on their own packages, I think this is not too cool, many of the patches I see came from the Debian comunity, so what is Ubuntu doing for its own OS ????

I might be good a few years back, but now, I dont see why stay with Ubuntu if they arent doing much for the Linux comunity, even for its own comunity/users, who reports ideas/bugs and they even care for it....

Hi! I'm having same problem also on a Dell Optiplex 740 AMD 4400+

After about 10 min - 20 min or so, mouse freezes. Then if I try to reboot Xorg (CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE) keyboard also freezes to then only using SSH to reboot machine.

I've posted yesterday on ubuntuforums.org on 'General forum' asking for help IN TRYING TO FIND OUT what was happening (if it was any bug I had just submitted that bug) and they simply deleted my post! This kind of problems usually can be generated by a lot of different situations: hardware problems, xorg problems, kernel problems, etc. So finding solutions to this problem usually requires a lot of knowledge in different concepts. I don't there is any reason why they did that, deleting my post. They just could posted a link like this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3003669&postcount=32 (this _may_ help. I'm using about 30min, and no problems so far)

So please, Ubuntu, start listening more your community, other wise, as I saw in other posts, I'll bbe switching to a more community oriented distro, like Fedora, even hating yum!

I've also had the same issue.
It's very intermittent and can go for a few days without freezing but when it does, it requires a hard reset.

Did a full upgrade from Gutsy (which was very stable with the same hardware) to Hardy.

Tony

I recommend you to do a fresh install, Ive done it my self and I have
"better" results. Now I did not install Propietary Drivers (beacuse if I
did, I could not use Brightness control) and Im not experimenting the
freezing problem so often than before.

I don't know if this will help, but, for the people using Dell OptiPlex 740 with BIOS version 2.0.12, upgrade to version 2.1.6 released on 5/20/2008

My Hardy install is also up-to-date (last Friday 5/23/2008 some xorg updates were installed). Since then , I didn't have any problems so far with mouse hangs / freeze

Dunno :( maybe some nasty xorg bug , or maybe Dell's fault, or the even worst: both's fault!

For the people still having this issu, I would say to first of all, in all instances, check if your BIOS is up-to-date in FIRST PLACE...
