Bug Description

Binary package hint: mediatomb

I had installed the mediatomb .deb from the mediatomb website. When I try to upgrade to hardy repo version I get error:
"E: /var/cache/apt/archives/mediatomb-common_0.10.0.dfsg1-2_i386.deb: trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/mediatomb', which is also in package mediatomb
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/mediatomb_0.10.0.dfsg1-2_all.deb: there is no script in the new version of the package - giving up"
then when I try to remove mediatomb package I get error:
"E: mediatomb: Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should"
or from dpkg:
"dpkg: error processing mediatomb (--remove):
Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
reinstall it before attempting a removal.

Thanks for this bug report.

I would currently not classify this as a bug. I believe this can easily be resolved by removing your non-ubuntu mediatomb package and then install the ubuntu package.

sudo dpkg --remove mediatomb

sudo apt-get install mediatomb

If you agree I would like to close this report.

Thanks

I don't consider it a bug either, but be aware that some other people out there may encounter the same problem.
I could not simply remove the original mediatomb package, the only way I could remove it was to edit /var/lib/dpkg/info/mediatomb.prerm, remove the package then install the Ubuntu versions.

I'm happy for you to close the report, just wanted this on the record in case someone else encounters the same errors.

Thanks for your good work (and the fast response),
Mark

Thanks.

I am closing this report in agreement with the reporter. The issue is a non-ubuntu installation of the packages that has a bug. There is no issue of this kind known in the ubuntu package.
