Bug Description

On Hardy Alpha 5 Alternate CD version 32 bit - the initial Language choice screen (the one before you even get to the initial Ubuntu setup/install screen menu) extends down over and covers up the "press F4 prompt to choose modes". The key listing below that IS visible.

I did not see this problem on the Hardy Alpha 4 version.

Let me know if you need any other information.

Thanks.

Yes, I get this too. I think that it harms usability because you expect the regular boot menu and then boom this huge language list comes up. If it were more neatly organized it would be better, or maybe it should have its own screen.

Probably should mention that this is on Beta.

I take that back it doesn't happen on the Beta, can you confirm this?

I tried the BETA version yesterday, March 22, 2008 and yes I saw this same problem on the BETA version.

So to recap, it did not seem to be on the ALPHA 4, the problem seems to have started on the ALPHA 5 version and is now still present on the BETA.

Thanks.

I'm fixing this by adding a header to the language menu (so it looks less like an accident) and by suppressing the text about the F4 menu until after the initial language menu has been displayed. This isn't perfect, but it feels less slapdash now.

This bug was fixed in the package gfxboot-theme-ubuntu - 0.5.17

---------------
gfxboot-theme-ubuntu (0.5.17) hardy; urgency=low

  * Add a header to the language and keymap menus; this seems to make it
feel like less of an accident when the language menu is displayed
    automatically on startup.
  * Don't display "Press F4 to select alternative start-up and installation
modes" until the initial language menu has been dismissed (LP: #197260).
  * Update sizes of menu items before adjusting the menu to avoid screen
    width overflow (LP: #44950).
