Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

When starting Ubuntu 7.10 in live cd mode with connected usb adsl modem Huawei SmartAX MT810, I get the following message: "[{some numbers here}] usb 4-2: [UEAGLE ATM] requesting firmware ueagle-atm/DSPep.bin failed with error -2". I get this message several times, then ubuntu goes into graphics mode and I get a dialog box about the graphics card not being recognized and ubuntu running on low resolution (probably because I have Nvidia 8800gt). When I click continue, ubuntu goes back into text mode, and the UEAGLE-ATM message appears over and over again, so I just have to reboot.
P.S. I have successfully used that modem in kubuntu before after installing br2684ctl and ueagle-data.

The Hardy Heron Alpha series is currently under development and contains an updated version of the kernel. It would be helpful if you could test the latest Hardy Alpha release: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. We'll keep this report open against the actively developed kernel bug against 2.6.22 this will be closed. Thanks.

I tried Ubuntu 8.04 alpha 6, and the live cd boots and installs successfully. However, the mentioned message appears for a split second before the login screen shows up; it has also began to appear over and over when I clicked 'log out' once, though I couldn't reprocduce it later.

I got another loop of those messages today when I pressed the shutdown button, which never happened before - so it seems this occurs at random... Strange that everything worked fine under kubuntu 7.10, though the modem wasn't detected automatically.

Per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please attach the following information. Please be sure to attach each file as a separate attachment.

* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
* dmesg > dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

Also would you be able to take a digital photo of the message you see when you shutdown? Thanks.

For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy, please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help and feedback.

Attached all the logs and two photos: the first photo shows a series of messages that appeared after I pressed the restart button, the second one shows some mesages that appear about 3 seconds before the restart. I used Ubuntu alpha 6, but I could install and try the beta if it is needed.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I tried Alpha 5 today (just live cd, without installing). The error message "[UEAGLE ATM] requesting firmware ueagle-atm/DSPep.bin failed with error -2" still appears for a brief second before the x-server is loaded (like in 8.04), but doesn't prevent the live cd from loading like it did in 7.10. My modem (quite popular in Moscow, a major isp sold those some years ago) still isn't recognized by the system without the installation of br2684ctl and ueagle-data packages; I also had to do all the configuring in the terminal (with br2684ctl, ifconfig and pppoeconf) since I don't know how to do this through network manager. Wouldn't it be a good idea to at least add the ueagle-data package to the default installation to avoid error messages?

P.S. I also got lots of weird stuff when selecting "install ubuntu" and "check CD for defects" from the live cd menu. Only once did the "check CD" procedure work in graphical mode, on other occasions it either screwed up the screen or launched the checking in text mode after some errors. The "install ubuntu" gave out some errors and continuous speaker beeping. Also, after starting the live cd, i got some "gvfsd-trash" and "fast-user-switch" applet errors. I don't know if I should file new bug reports on those issues or contribute to some existing thread. I've got some digital photos of screen if it helps.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
