How did you mount the floppy disk?
If you didn't use thunar (or hal) it's not possible to umount it with thunar.

I am able to reproduce this using Xubuntu 8.04.01 and Thunar 0.9.0-4ubuntu2 on a new installation with no added programs
Steps to produce the problem:
  1. insert floppy disk in drive;
  2. click on Places -> Floppy Drive (Floppy Drive is greyed out at this time)
  3. Thunar opens at /media/floppy0 and shows view of floppy disk files and directories
      a. right-click on Floppy Drive shortcut shows "Mount Volume" and "Eject Volume"
      b. files and directories open as expected if clicked at this point
  4. right-click on Floppy Drive, left-click "Mount Volume"
      a. greys out as expected
      b. no errors
      c. /media/.hal-mtab is empty
      d. /etc/mtab shows entry:
          /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 vfat ro,nosuid,nodev,utf8,user=charlie 0 0
  5. right-click on Floppy Drive shortcut, left-click on "Eject Volume"
      a. gui error box opens:
          Failed to eject "Floppy Drive".
eject unable to eject. last error: Invalid argument
      b. left click Floppy Drive shortcut, "Mount Volume" is greyed out, "Eject Volume" is still active
      c. Floppy Drive appears to have unmounted; /etc/mtab no longer has the floppy drive listed
      d. To be able to mount/unmount the floppy drive again using Thunar, I have to log out of the desktop and log in again
      e. I am able to mount/unmount the floppy disk using terminal

I can reproduce this any time with the same results.

Expected results: Thunar should allow mount/unmount of the floppy disk; if "Eject Volume" is used to unmount, perhaps the wording should be changed to "Unmount Volume". Eject means the floppy disk should eject from the drive.

Is this a duplicate of bug 199005, Unmount is not possible on floppy drives? Even though different storage is involved, both give an error when using "Eject Volume" in Thunar.

I see I made a mistake. The above should have read:
Are Bug 200936 and Bug 204261 the same as this? Even though different storage is involved, all give an error when using "Eject Volume" in Thunar.

Personally I don't think Bug 200936 is the same as this one, because:
1. The error message isn't the same, so the trigger for the error message can be different and so can be the cause for the error.
2. This bug receives an corresponding entry in /etc/mtab, while Bug 200936 receives an error stating it has no corresponding entry in /etc/mtab.

Personally I don't think Bug 204261 is the same as this one, because:
1. It's basically 2 reports in one: a request for an "umount"-option and a report of an error upon "eject".
2. No-one confirmed the Bug 204261, no-one was able to reproduce the bug and the bug reporter considers it as fixed.

To mount floppy : Right Click on Floppy Drive - Mount - in Nautilus (File
Browser). Do not use Double Click.
To open floppy : Double Click or Right Click - Open. Umount floppy after use.

@miketan63: Please read the original report on top. Nautilus does not exist in Xubuntu. This issue is the ability what you do in Xubuntu using Thunar File Manager, the default in Xubuntu. The ability to do the mount and unmount in Nautilus could be a work-around, for those with enough system resources to use it. However, it is part of the Gnome desktop environment, and not a part of the Xfce desktop environment.

affects: thunar-volman (Ubuntu) → exo (Ubuntu)

I don't know if this is the same, or a different bug, but it's worth commenting before posting another report: using Karmic an iPod (this has happened, but doesn't always happen, at least so far) may not eject when one tells the system to do so either using 'eject' through a right-click on the desktop, or using a program that uses that services (like Banshee); the information given in a pop-up is,
Unable to eject "J":

Device to unmount is not in /media/.hal-mtab so it is not mounted by HAL
(where "J" is the name of the iPod).

I was under the impression that Hal was just deprecated, replaced, so there may be parts of the system still looking for it at one point or another, and features that may/not (depending?) be dependent upon it, not that it's surprising since its replacement is major, and this is Linux!

It is not possible to test this on Xubuntu 10.04, since the floppy drive is not recognized at this time. With the changes in how drives are detected and having removable devices removed from /etc/fstab, the floppy drive does not show up in Thunar, thus the "eject" still won't work.

In natty, the mount/eject code has been dropped from exo 0.5.5, and is now handled directly by the "new" thunar (it will be uploaded after the alpha1 is released) and gio/gvfs. Reaffecting.

Due to the changes in hardware obsoleting the floppy drive, this will not be fixed. Xubuntu 10.04 LTS is the last release supporting floppy drives. That release can be used until 2013, at which time all support for floppy drives will be dropped. Thanks and please continue to report bugs you find.
