Bug Description

Kubuntu Hardy Heron Beta (amd64) normal CD (not alternate)

During the installation I used manual partition to format my old knubuntu partition and set up a new root filesystem. I was then asked to set up my user account. After doing so and clicking okay a new dialog box comes up saying detecting partitions with a progress bar. This almost immediatly is at 15 % then it goes no further and the installation is frozen (the cursor can no longer be moved on the screen etc). If the computer is restarted one can see that the initial format must have worked (grub loader from my previous installation fails to boot passed stage 1.5)
Retrying the install again results in exactly the same problem again.

Hi,

Sorry that it's taken me a while to reply. I've looked at the links that you have sent me, but I don't see how I can get the requested log. My computer is completely frozen, the only thing that I can do is restart my computer. Hence, I have no log files. Booting from the live CD shows that Ubiquity did not get as far as formatting the specified drive (which makes sense the last message that appears on the progress bar is that it is detecting filesystems). And this time it didn't affect my bootloader ( but this might be because I was temporarily using a copy of Mandriva).

Let me know if I can be of any more help

Dave

I'm afraid I'm not sure what the problem might be, but if the system completely hangs then that's generally a kernel bug rather than an installer bug; the installer is a relatively ordinary application and shouldn't be able to hang the computer if the kernel is working correctly.

(It's also possible that your CD is damaged or your CD drive is dirty or defective; it's always worth doing a CD integrity check *and* cleaning your CD drive.)

Hi Dave and Jean-Paul,

The last comments made here from you were from a while ago. I'm curious if this is still an issue for you with the more recent Hardy 8.04.1 release? Were you able to confirm that this wasn't a bad CD at least per Colins' comment. Please let us know. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I'm not having the problem anymore, but I've only tested it in a vm (I don't have an extra machine to fiddle around with, so I'm staying with Hardy on my laptop for the moment).

Same problem in 8.10 RC1. I am using the alternate install disk, and no matter if I use guided or manual partition, the partitioner immediately goes to about 33% and hangs. I have tried a variety of different things: switching hard drives, cd drives, burning a new install disk and using it, and partition in different ways. I didn't have this problem in 8.04.1.

BTW, It is the amd_64 alternate disc. I haven't tried to replicate with the i386 yet.

Ok, tried the final release of the i386 8.10 disc and it worked.

dave, since you are the original bug reporter, care to confirm this is resolved for you with Intrepid? Thanks.
