Can't list partitions or files in GRUB

Bug Description

Binary package hint: grub

It doesn't appear possible to be able to list devices (ie what can be passed to root) or files (what you'd actually want to boot).

A friend of mine says you can use tab completion but this isn't mentioned in the help in any case.

It would be nice to have an ls command (for files) and, say, lsdev (for devices that can be mounted).

Fixing the documentation to mention tab completion would be nice too :)

It's basically a feature request.. (or a documentation one)

Hmm this is in Grub, not in Ubuntu..
My suggestion was that it should have commands to list devices & files rather than rely on you knowing tab completion works.

Also documenting tab completion would be a good thing.

Tab completion is sort of documented in:
http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/Naming-convention.html
beginning with:
"To help you find out which number specifies a partition you want, the GRUB command-line options have argument completion."

Yes, but unfortunately my PC wasn't booting so I couldn't read the online docs :)

I think prefacing the 'help' output with a similar line would be a good way to go.

As has been pointed out already, grub legacy supports tab completion to help you find devices and files. Grub legacy is no longer supported and we have moved to grub 2, which has a proper ls command that will list devices and files, therefore I will now close this bug.
