Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Ubuntu Hardy Heron beta i386, following today's kernel and compix updates. Crash in compiz.real.

After login, white screen when desktop should appear. CTRL+ALT+F1 can bring up the terminal. Used sudo top to kill Xorg process. This produced new login screen. Change session to Gnome fail-safe works (nothing else does). Fail-safe mode produces desktop, wireless works.

At some point shortly after I begin working, a crash alert appears, for compiz.real. That's when I sent this message. At the time, I had opened the system monitor window, but I don't think that caused the crash.

Under normal circumstances, my desktop uses flgrx (ATI) display driver, with only one workspace.

compiz version 1:0.7.4-0ubuntu4. There was no package compiz.real or compiz-real located by apt-cache policy.

I have been able to solve the problem, thanks to an Ubuntu forum post. However, it might still be a bug, since not everyone will find the solution.

The problem was that the ATI flgrx driver failed to load with kernel -16, as of the time I originally posted this bug.

But flgrx still worked in kernel -15. Using kernel -15, hardware manager, I disabled the ATI restricted driver. Using synaptic, I obtained the envyng package and its GUI. From terminal, I used sudo envyng to download and install a new ATI graphics driver. Then I re-booted to kernel 16. At first, it was in the wrong resolution. But I enabled the new ATI graphics driver and re-booted again. All was well.

Someone suggested that afterwards, it helps to re-install compiz. I don't know.

Hello

I do not have the detailed information handy that you have but the crash I
had was also with compiz-real. It followed the update of the compiz programs
on my Hardy Heron beta i386 system. I am using the Linux 2.6.24-16-generic
i686 kernel with Intel 915 graphics system on my motherboard. I was able to
get a usable desktop using Gnome-failsafe. I tried a few measures that did
not work, however when I did a complete reinstall of all the compiz packages
I was using my system was up and running properly again. It is now several
days and everything is running fine.

Thanks, I am an almost total Linux novice. I am running an ATI video card
and gather from your notes below that the crash is somehow related to
video. I have no idea what the compiz programs are or how to reinstall
them. I do find Ubuntu 8.04 more useful than 7.10, which was the first
Ubuntu that would actually install to my computer. I think that in a few
more iterations Ubuntu will displace Windows on my machines. But not yet.
So, what is compiz and how do I get the files to reinstall them?

Thanks Rob Backus

Hi
Compiz is a set of programs used for managing the desktop and enabling the
special effects. You use the Synaptic package manager to uninstall and
install them(and all your other software). If you do not know where that is
you find it in desktop menu under System>Administration>Synaptic Packager
Manager. This has a search utility and you can search for compiz and it will
list all the compiz packages on your system. You right click on the package
to get the list of available actions. All I did was choose the complete
uninstall option(removes all settings as well as the software) and then
reinstall. It seems that that did the trick. When doing this I was logged in
using the Gnome failsafe desktop which does not need compiz.

Hope this helps. By the way, once you get used to linux you'll love it. I
took windows off my system 2 years ago and don't miss it at all. Have fun.

Thanks, of course I have no idea what the Gnome fail safe mode is.

I have been disatisfied with Windows for many years now, it is often buggy
and just really top heavy. I am really impressed with how Linux keeps
improving. For instance, Ubuntu 8.04 Beta is much better at reading my NTFS
files, which is critical for any transition. The biggest draw back at this
point is that more and more offices are going to Microsoft Exchange which
really locks one in. The IT guys at my office said it worked and it worked
well and nothing else out there does what it does. Damn.

Thanks Rob
