Any Graphic Equaliser in the media players i mention.... when i activate EQ in
order to change bass levels for example, the sound becomes a lot quieter.
I have tried in amarok with the xine engine (arts doesnt support eq), in xmms
and in beep media player

This probably isn't an alsa-base bug. Let's see if the amarok maintainer has
any ideas.

if there is any way to add different packages, because this is not just linked to amarok. I have the
same problem whatever music player i use that has a graphic equaliser.

It might be the soundcard module i have, but i doubt it. i used ens1371 before when i was on
debian woody with no problem. I have noticed this problem only since i switched to ubuntu.
I'll try with gnome, and xfce, it could be the kde sound support.
But i repeat it isnt just amarok.....
Can anybody else test.???
I'll try with a different soundcard too...

OK done some tests with different players & window managers
tried xmms, beep & amarok
on kde and xfce

results:
xmms doesnt have this problem, on either WM.
both other players do have problem on both WMs.

I changed the output plugin alsa config on xmms from hw:0,1 to default, see if it changed anything. still works.
i also tried changing output engines but cant use OSS....
only thing different from xmms & beep is that xmms says it is using the alsa 1.2.10 output, and beep the alsa 0.97 output.
dunno if that helps any.

tested with my onboard SIS 735 chipset sound card (AC97).
same problem. I enable G. Eq. and the sound volume drops drastically.

It's true, activate the EQ and the volume drops, but boost the preamp and it'll regain it's previous volume, this isn't a bug. Change the settings and change the sound, it's common knowledge.

I can confirm this bug, but I'm not sure it's a bug in amarok, or that it's realistic to fix.

I'm thinking that the way amarok does the EQ is that it lowers the volume for all parts of the sound spectrum so it has enough room to boost it up a little of the EQ goes above the zero line.
