Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Since upgrading to Kubunto Hardy from the previous release, I have found that the previously stable Compiz crashes at least once a day, causing my display manager to revert to kdm.

The only message I can find in any log about this is a single segfault line in /var/log/syslog, viz:
Apr 28 21:15:19 antwerp kernel: [18893.669473] compiz.real[9653]: segfault at 20 rip 7f87468e6edf rsp 7fff51784150 error 4

Apr 29 09:49:17 antwerp kernel: [ 1911.139160] compiz.real[9907]: segfault at 1000001cf rip 426712 rsp 7fffebb30500 error 4

Apr 30 11:40:56 antwerp kernel: [ 7021.196458] compiz.real[10240]: segfault at 1000001cf rip 426712 rsp 7fffc8e2f830 error 4

Nothing APPARENTLY relevant appears in the Xorg log or in .xsession-errors, but I have attached these in case they help.

I can't find any way to run Compiz in any kind of debug mode; if there's a way I'm happy to do so to gather more data.

Sadly yes, I'm still having this problem. Compiz is crashing at least once a day.

Is there any way I can run Compiz to get more diagnostic information out of it?

We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release (maybe live CD)? Thanks in advance.

If it does, can you include the following files:
~/.xsession-errors
 /var/log/Xorg.0.log

and the output of lspci -vvnn.

Also try to see if the bug happens with the default settings. To get the default settings, install "compiz-config-manager", launch it and then go to "Preferences" (left bottom corner) and click on the "Reset to defaults" button.

Hi Scott,
Unfortunately I can't confirm whether or not this is still a problem as I've given up using Compiz (or KDE4's desktop effects) as once the "ooh, isn't that impressive" stage has worn off, having a more responsive desktop became more interesting.

Sadly I can't even try to reproduce this with a live CD of the latest release, as ATI's video driver isn't available with it (due to X incompatibilities) . I'd suggest the best course of action would be to close the bug off, as nobody else seems to have been affected. (I'm not sure what the correct status to change it to would be, otherwise I'd do that myself...)
