Cannot create dvds from dvd isos with graveman

Bug Description

When I get a dvd (4 gigabytes) and do a
dd if=/dev/dvd of=file.iso,

this file cannot be recorded again in a dvd-rw. It says:

Please insert an empty or appendable CDR/RW in drive LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1633S Removable CD-ROM to continue... Currently: a DVDRW

Same when one places a CD-R in the DVD writer. Graveman simultaneously 1) reports the correct media in the drive, but 2) asks that the user insert the media in the drive. Fstab apparently OK: dev/hdc mnt/dvd.

I'm using 0.3.12-5. Remains a problem. Not in Ubuntu: using Zenwalk
3.0. Kernel is 2.6.17.11 (gcc version 3.4.6). Might simply be
permissions - threw my hands up on this one a few weeks ago and am
instead routing CD .isos to my Winblows box for Nero burning. That
said, had same problems w/graveman back in Debian times and instead
used gnomebaker and/or CLI for a good result. Thanks for the
feedback.

It's still a problem on ubuntu/kubuntu 7.04:

When I choose "Duplicate CD" and select an ISO-image (4GB) as source and have an empty DVD+R in the drive, graveman says:

Please insert an empty or appendable CDR/RW in drive Optiarc DVD RW AD-7173A Removable CD-ROM to continue...

    Currently: a DVDR

Strictly spoken, "Duplicate CD" is not duplicating a *DVD*, but I really doubt if this behaviour is on purpose.

I found a workaround: mount the iso (/ nrg / img) image with 'sudo mount -o loop' etc, and then burn the mounted directory to DVD.

sudo mount -o loop /my/big.iso my-iso-mount-directory/

Has one of you the ability to check this with a ubuntu Gutsy Tribe-2 Desktop Live CD?

I will try. Downloading is easy, but I have to connect a second DVD drive to
my machine. And I must confess I think the result is going to be same. I
think it's something in growisofs or it's commandline parameters from k3b.

I tried k3b on Kubunty Gutsy Tribe 2, and alas with exact the same
result: the Samsung HT-Q20 says "play prohibited. please, check disc"
when I put in the resulting video-DVD.

As a reminder:
- earlier k3b's (0.12.x) create perfect video-DVDs. Only k3b 1.0+ result
in the problematic video-DVDs
- burning an video-DVD-ISO with growisofs results in a problematic
video-DVD, too
- graveman gives perfect video-DVDs.
It's my hypothesis that the problem is in the way how k3b invokes
growisofs or genisoimage.

Output from ps -ef during k3b burn below.

Hi,

though mentioning another driver, can you please check

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=193449

The interesting part is: This message seems to come from the drive rather than from linux as the same message can occur under windows. It seems some drives have problems with burning/playing some specific formats.

The message is indeed from the Samsung Home Theater player, and not from
Linux. But the thing is that with older k3b's everything was OK. So
something in (or under) k3b has changed, which causes the error message on
the Samsung and prevents playing.

Sorry guys, the bug I reported is EXCLUSIVELY from graveman. The error, on the test machine, didn't appear in any other program, so please let's stay on topic.

Mounting a directory and recording its content is not an equal copy, and can destroy some special dvds.
