Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop, upgraded from 7.10
I attempted a routine check for updates, got his error report :

A unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package
and include the following error message:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_hardy-updates_main_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

After reporting "bugs/errors" I opened Add/Remove Programs
which gave me a new error message
AND
the error message here suggested in part:
using
 sudo apt-get update
&
 sudo apt-get install -f

after which I was able to install one program,
and then run update-manager successfully
to install 36 updates for Hardy-Heron

Thanks Michael - this problem is due to a corrupt package list. Could you confirm whether this is still a problem for you?

Thanks

NOT still a problem,
the fixes posted on forum and in the error message
resolved the temporary problem, as I posted in a follow-up.

Sorry Chris, my bad,
I meant to go back and update that one as "resolved/fixed/ etc..

Now I will remember that
if _I_ don't do it ... in a timely manner ...
someone else will have to clean-up after me !

MANY Thanks for going thru and checking !!
Much appreciated !
