Bug Description

No sound is played for the logout function on either the Gutsy or Hardy final release versions.

When I go into the System/Preferences/Sound section, the sound for the logout function WILL play just fine there but it will not play when the actual logout, restart or shutdown function is performed.

The LOGIN sound seems to play correctly in both the Sound section and also when performing the actual login function.

Thanks.

It looks like one solution to this is to install the "esound" package from Synaptic, which apparently is not installed by default.

Then my question is, if the installation of this esound is necessary to make the logout sound play, then why is it not installed by default during O/S installation ? Surely there has to be a better solution to this !!!

thank you for your bug report, esound is installed on gutsy, on hardy pulseaudio-esound-compat is used rather, did you have this one installed? how did you install ubuntu?

You are partially correct.

On my Gutsy install (I think installed from the desktop CD, as opposed to the Alternate CD) the esound program was NOT shown as installed but the esound common was shown as being installed. As soon as I installed the esound program on the Gutsy computer and restarted the next time around the logout sound worked perfectly.

On my Hardy installation on a separate computer (it was installed from the Alternate CD version - final release of Hardy) the pulse-audio-esound-compat WAS installed by the logout sound did NOT play properly. As soon as I attempted to install the esound (which at the same time uninstalled the pulse-audio-esound-compat), and then restarted the computer, the next time around the logout sound worked perfectly.

Let me know if you need more info.

Please note that on the Gutsy computer, as far as I know, the fact that the esound was not installed was a default installation setting, I had not uninstalled/unchecked it to my knowledge.

Also, on the Hardy computer, as far as I know, the fact that the esound was not installed and the pulse-audio was installed was a default installation setting, I had not previously changed anything as far as these program installations that were done by the O/S installation.

Thanks.

the gutsy installation case will not change now, the pulseaudio esound compat package should work on hardy though, reassigning the bug

I just checked this problem of the sound not playing during the logout function on a brand new installation of Hardy final release version and the sound will NOT play unless I go into Synaptic and install esound package, which in turn un-installs the pulse-audio-esound-compat package.

This is 2 different computers that I have gotten this exact same problem on the sound not playing unless the esound program replaces the pulse-audio esound. It may SHOULD work on Hardy, but it sure does not work on my computers !!!

Thanks.

I can confirm this, my Gutsy and Hardy installations behave exactly the way Wpshooter describes. The annoying part is that installing esound in Hardy removes the ubuntu-desktop metapackage.

This is for a couple of reasons.
1. GNOME doesn't wait for the GNOME logout sound to be played before killing everything. Esound obviously manages to hold things up enough to play the sound, whihc pulseaudio doesn't.
2. The pulseaudio x11 module also is loaded to make sure that pulseaudio processes rae not left lying around on logout, so thanks to the GNOME session logging out, the x11 module for pulseaudio shuts pulseaudio down.

Most users as it is are moving away from the computer when they logout, so its thought that a logout sound is not needed.

If logout sound is not needed then why is it still listed on the available sound functions in the sound section under system/preferences ?

I can confirm that there is still no logout sound, even in Intrepid Ibex Beta, I guess we'll be waiting a while?

Same as Lee. Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 64-bit with no logout sound.

It's being discussed for Intrepid here:

Logout sound is still needed by blind users, as it helps them know when the computer is shutting down.

That is a very valid point. This should be fixed for handicapped people (the
blind in particularly) asap. It's also slightly embarrassing when you're
showing it to a friend and there is no grand finale when shutting down like
every other operating system.

Try this one, guys, it should work!

How annoying - if it is intended that you can't add a log-out sound, the option should be removed! Or perhaps someone could hack it in such a way that, when a user adds a logout sound, the system shutdown settings will change so the sound can be played.

I know that the sound probably has been removed to reduce shutdown time, but should be fixed!

Who said it was removed to reduce shutdown time? It's been a _bug_ for a long time AFAIK, not intentional.
