Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

If a gtk menu pops up and the program goes to sleep, then the whole desktop freezes. I modified a python gtk program available here:
http://www.pygtk.org/pygtk2tutorial/examples/menu.py
The attached program has been slightly modified to sleep in the callback when the button is pressed. I expect this one application to become unresponsive. Instead, the entire desktop hangs (like how Windows hangs!).
So if a (buggy) app does some infinitely blocking operation, then I have to restart my session. I think this is a serious problem.

Please investigate.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

This is because popup menus do a screen grab so that you can only click on them. If an application freezes when it has a screen grab the whole display freezes.

Hi cybernytrix,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
