Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-ogltrans

I get the ogl transitions on the slide transitions list in impress, but when I apply it to a slide, with preview on, impress crashes. I tried again, turning preview off first, applied the transition, went to slideshow and impress crashed again.

I have tried this with desktop effects turned off, just in case it was a clash with Compiz, but same occurred regardless.

Ubuntu 8.04 (64bit)

As an example, one of the ogl transitions that will be added to the slide transitions list after installing the package is 'Rochade'. See http://www.oooninja.com/2008/02/eye-...s-impress.html for more detail of these transitions.

There have been some recent updates to openoffice. I re-installed the openoffice.org-ogltrans package and now Impress does not crash when I apply the 3d transitions, but it does not execute the transitions either!

The fact it doesn't display transitions is already filed as a separate bug marking this as fixed since the initial part of the bug (the crash) has been corrected.

Thanks,

I did search for existing bugs but didn't find it. Have now re-installed the package and Impress no longer crashes. however the 3d transitions do not work either - so this is only a partial fix.
What's the id of existing bug?

Oh yea, what video driver are you using? I confirmed it doesn't work on amd64 nvidia, but don't know if it is something specific to nvidia or not.

Intel - I've updated the original bug...

I don't know where to post this, but I'm having the exact same issue with the Ibex beta. I tried re-installing the whole os, then reinstalling openoffice, then openoffice.org-ogltrans but the programme continues to crash (so mdbarton's semi-fix didn't work).

I'm not sure if this is a new problem, but I'm loathe to open a new bug report: I can't seem to log anything relevant from my machine: apport doesn't launch, I get nothing if I launch impress from the terminal and I'm not sure how to trawl system-wide logs for info. So I'm not sure if I have anything that would help developers to investigate.

I'm running a toshiba satellite u200, with an intel graphics processor (Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:27a6] (rev 03)), and it seems to run compiz, glxgears and the opengl screensavers without a problem. Oh, and the Openoffice OpenGL transitions worked perfectly on this machine in Hardy. My video info on xorg.conf reads:
Section "Device"
 Identifier "Configured Video Device"
 Option "UseFBDev" "true"
EndSection

(if that's any help).

Advice on how to work this up into a proper bug report (or on whether that's necessary) would be very much appreciated.

I can confirm what Cokelly says about Intrepid beta. I filed a bug myself, and found other reports of this as well. I tried installing the first version of the package openoffice.org-ogltrans from Hardy, and Impress doesn't crash, but doesn't display the transitions either. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1525 with a Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller. I also run Compiz, glxgears and opengl screensavers correctly. I've tried disabling Compiz when using impress and these transitions, but the result is the same. Also, the effects worked perfectly fine under Hardy.

Still crashing here.

Ubuntu 8.10 x86, OpenOffice.org 2.4 (standard in 8.10 repo as of today). Intel 945GM graphics with compiz on or off, same effect.

To reproduce:-

Install package openoffice.org-ogltrans
Open OpenOffice.org Impress
Create new presentation of any kind
On the right side, choose slide transitions
Scroll down to the very bottom and select a slide transition such as "rochade, static or fine dissolve, any of those right at the bottom".
OO.o crashes.

Had others reproduce under VirtualBox and on a machine with an ATI card/driver, so not likely to be an intel driver issue. I'm pretty sure I also hit this with the AMD64 version of Ubuntu before I reinstalled on the same hardware as x86.

Given that these transitions will give the same (or better) wow factor to a presentation that an audience gets from keynote running on OSX, and that seeing Ubuntu running presentation is a good way of exposing people to Ubuntu, I'd argue that it's a real shame this is not working! People just think its a boring old powerpoint presentation, yet the audience might ask about the what I'm running if the presentation has eyecandy on it and the laptop doesn't have an apple on the lid. Just a thought...

I just tested this on my laptop which uses an nvidia card using the nvidia binary driver and this works fine.

Alan - could you be a bit more specific - what CPU, Nvidia card, etc. Which version of Ubuntu and Architecture (32bit, 64bit?) are you using?

Same problem here.
Wherever Compiz is on or not, 3D transitions just crash Impress (and every other openoffice program open).
CPU: Intel Pentium M 1,8 Ghz
VIdeo Card: Intel GMA950
Ubuntu 32 Bits, 8.10 (intrepid ibex).

PS: Even with the experimental openoffice.org 3.0 packages, 3D transitions just crash again. It makes me think that it could be a system-wide problem, not just an openoffice bug.
