Latin Keyboard Layout wrongly recognized as 'Laos'

Bug Description

When the 'la' layout is selected in xorg's configuration file, the 'Laos' layout
is mapped instead. As a result, not latam characters appear as you type. This
causes a lot of confussion, as there is no way to type correct latam character
without touching the xorg.conf file for a workaround.

This can be reproduced using the Live CD. When the cd boots and asks for the
Language and Layout, enter any Language and the 'latin american' keyboard
layout. When the live session starts, typing anyhting, for example in Gedit,
results in not valid latam characters. Furthermore, when going to System ->
Preferences -> Keyboard, 'Laos' is shown as the keyboard layout.

In the device section of the xorg.conf file, "XkbLayout" is correctly set to
"la", but Laos characters appear written; so this doesn't seem to be a problem
in the xorg.conf file. The only work around to get an usable computer is to set
the layout to 'es' or 'us', none of which is the correct layout, but at least
they are a better match than Laos.

This may be a duplicate of http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17495 ,
but I can't say for sure without more guidelines about where the bug may lie.

The sentence looks a bit odd, so to clarify: "XkbLayout" is correctly set to
"la", but when you type, the keybd layout is Laos one.

The problem occurs on Breezy, tested on the RC1 Live CD and on my personal PC
(which was upgraded recently from Hoary).

'latam' is the name for the Latin American layout, not 'la'. are you sure it
was the rc1 live cd you were testing with, and not preview? this bug was fixed
a while ago, and there is now nothing at all that would cause a layout of 'la'
to be set. if this problem persists, please attach Xorg.0.log and/or see your
doctor.

My apologies. I need to see my doctor, as I tested with the Preview Live CD, not
with the RC1 one.

My xorg.conf file had "XkbLayout" set to 'la' because it was the value set by
the Hoary install. It seems the Breeze update left the value unchanged, but I
don't understand why it appeared as 'Laos' in Gnome's keyboard preferences.

Anyway, manually editing it to 'latam' solved the problem. Well, for the most part.

Now whenever I log in, a dialog appears telling me the keyboard X server layout
doesn't match the one set in Gnome, althought the first is now 'latam' and the
second 'Latin American'. I don't want to sound confusing, but Gnome didn't
complain when the first one was set to 'la' and the second to 'Latin American'.

Just re-assigning the bug to xkeyboard-config. If any of you have updated information on this from dapper that would be great.

xkeyboard-common can't change the configuration of xorg and xorg will just have to cope on upgrades.

hmm i am bit in doubt if we can even fix this one. The major issue here is that i can't fix it in breezy and hoary -> dapper upgrades are not supported.
