Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I'm running AMD64 Ubuntu Hardy. When I look at the insert special characters dialog box, some of the symbols in the grid don't correspond with the preview or what is added to the actual document. Specifically, I'm using DejaVu Sans, with Subset= Latin-1. Examples are the degree symbol shows "i". The section symbol is the wrong symbol, not sure the name of the symbol it is showing though. The German double S symbol actually is the "section" symbol. There are two paragraph symbols on the grid. The first, (#166) is actually generates the symbol above the backslash (broken vertical line).

Yes as of last night. I will double check to see if there are any updates that I haven't received that might have somehow cured the problem. Maybe a fresh install could fix it if I'm the only one with this issue.

Yes that would be helpful had you done that...

Using the font Everson Mono (downloadable from http://www.evertype.com/emono/ )

In Open Office, Insert > Special Character .... the following characters are [usually] not displayed correctly in the pick list and are not inserted correctly:

U+00DF0, Latin capital eth (a hyphen or dash of some sort is displayed and inserted)

U+00E0, Latin small letter a with grave

U+00F0, Latin small letter eth

U+00F8, Latin small letter o with stroke (a macron or overscore such as U+00AF is displayed)

Font Forge, Character Map, and Lotus Symphony all handle these characters from this font correctly.

Further comments: this bug is erratic, and it appears in some fonts with different details.

In the attached spreadsheet, highlight cells from C4 to J38, then use Format>Cells>Font to assign a different font to these cells.

I suspect that the Unicode font-fallback mechanism is involved, because characters unprintable in the selected font are displayed using another font. Try Bitstream Vera Sans for some remarkable screwups.

The first "wrong" character is listed as U+00DF0. It should be U+00D0.

I should add that this bug is causing me real grief, as I am trying to document what appear to be hitherto-undocumented Georgian letters as the first step to possibly incorporating them into Unicode.. Lotus Symphony turns out to be rather brain dead about generating PDF files, Open Office is okay in that regard but then hits me with the display of improper characters.

IOW, this isn't just an academic exercise!

Do you still have this problem with the new version of OOo in the ppa at https://launchpad.net/~openoffice-pkgs/+archive ?

As far as I can tell this bug appears to be fixed in the new 3.0.1 debs.

Thanks,

Chris,

You are correct that the bug is now fixed... at least with my computer. Thanks for keeping tabs on this one.
