Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

It is not generally possible to determine whether an update will require a restart until after the packages are installed. This goes against the general design principle of warning before doing anything disruptive.

When a restart is required after updating, you are not required to immediately restart your computer, and therefore IMO it is not at all disruptive.

Marking as wishlist.

The package manager should be aware that a restart is required. Why doesn't the package manager not know that beforehand?

When the package manager is aware a restart is required, an option button should be shown with restart - don't restart messages. This way, somebody can abandon the computer during update, and come back with a clean session.

I suppose that if somebody is working and the computer needs to reboot, the work in progress can be saved before the computer restarts.

  * lp:~mterry/update-manager/requires-restart:
    - warn if a update requires a reboot (LP: #255443)

    This requires that the packages that need a reboot set
    "XB-Restart-Required: system" in the package record
