Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to ubuntu. In order to determine if this issue is usplash related, would you boot your computer with usplash disabled and then shutdown to see if you can reproduce the issue? To disable usplash for a single boot, you can follow these steps :

1.Press Esc during Grub boot delay to access the boot menu.
2.Select your actual Ubuntu boot line and press "e" to edit it.
3.Select the "kernel" line and press "e" to edit it.
4.At the end of the line, remove "splash" and "quiet" and press "enter".
5.Type "b" to boot the custom boot line.

I also notice hard hangs on boots from time to time with earlier kernels. with the update to 2.6.27-4.5, I tryed to boot 5 times in a row without success.

problem seems to go away when I remove the restricted-modules package.

Tim, care to confirm if removing linux-restricted-modules resolves this for you as well?

Reinhard, just curious which restricted drivers are you using? Also, care to attach your lspci -vvnn output

I'm going to tentatively reassign this to the linux-restricted-modules package. Thanks.

I'm not aware of actually using any restricted modules. that package is installed automatcally AFAIUI.

however that package also ships various firmware files that I need for my usb dvb-t card.

I *think* I had this with a Dell Inspiron 6400... but it happens rarely. I'll try to track this down when it happens again.

I can confirm this behaviour on a T60 and can without a doubt say it's due to the iwl3945 driver. Bug 275227 is similar. The workaround for me as been to blacklist iwl3945 for a successful boot then modprobe it.

Sorry for the long silence. I never installed restricted-modules, so it seems like it can't be that:
$ dpkg -l linux* | grep 2.6.27
un linux-doc-2.6.27 <none> (no description available)
ii linux-image-2.6.27-1-generic 2.6.27-1.2 Linux kernel image for version 2.6.27 on x86
un linux-source-2.6.27 <none> (no description available)

$ dpkg -l *restricted-modules* | grep 2.6.27
<no output>

Might I be missing some required packages?

I just tried the beta live CD. I only booted once, but graphical boot was successful.
