vesa framebuffer console won't work in intrepid even with modules loaded

Bug Description

Screen blank when vga=xxx even with framebuffer modules loaded. Running kernel w/o vesa shows at boot:

[ 2.400668] uvesafb: Getting VBE info block failed (eax=0x4f00, err=-3)
[ 2.400719] uvesafb: vbe_init() failed with -22
[ 2.400771] uvesafb: probe of uvesafb.0 failed with error -22

Yes. Error shows up on all Intrepid kernel relases.

booting 2.6.27-3 with kernel parms "video=uvesafb,mode_option=1440x900,mtrr=4" still gives the error above.

manually unloading & reloading the module works.

I can confirm this on a VMWare virtual setup. From my dmesg:

[ 3.478721] uvesafb: failed to execute /sbin/v86d
[ 3.478757] uvesafb: make sure that the v86d helper is installed and executable
[ 3.478842] uvesafb: Getting VBE info block failed (eax=0x4f00, err=-2)
[ 3.478927] uvesafb: vbe_init() failed with -22
[ 3.479011] uvesafb: probe of uvesafb.0 failed with error -22
