How can I find this out?

I haven't changed anything in graphics settings, so I think I'm using default opensource driver.

Hope this helps.

Yes, everything is just fine. Looks like this is XVideo + Compiz issue.

Update: I've triggered this bug once (unable to reproduce it now)
with compiz disabled, so this looks like not a compiz issue.

Maybe this is driver or X related? Wild guess: with compiz enabled,
video card is utilized much more, and because of that bug is always visible;
when compiz is disabled, video card is almost idle, and that's why
I almost never see this bug in this situation.

How can I help in debugging this issue?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below. Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card? Please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt. Thanks in advance.

Attached.

System runs fine without xorg.conf (but video bug is still present).
The only issue in that case is that GDM's screen resolution
is higher than my GNOME setting, but that's not a big problem.

Thanks for the report and the additional information. Can you please try with
 Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
in the Device section of your xorg.conf, and see if that helps?
