fails fallback to non-utf-8 locales for mp3 id3 tags

Bug Description

Since long ago we can specify in the MPEG Audio Plugin that we want to try other locales if ID3 tags are found to be not utf-8 encoded. Since a few weeks ago this begins to break.

I suspect this maybe related to libc, locales or glib, since I also see bug 28640.

Hi Alan. What symptoms does this bug produce? I'm having a problem where-by certain MP3's have ID3 tags that beep can't seem to handle; see bug 57949. Do you think this bug could be related / the same bug?

I am using GST_ID3_TAG_ENCODING=Big5 in /etc/environment to control beep-media-player, rhythmbox etc to use Big5 encoding when reading ID3 tags. Almost all of my songs (and songs among the Hong Kong community) are encoded like this, since even MP3 players won't show any ID3 tags except those in Big5 encoding.

Since Janurary this year it stops working in latest Dapper.Since I haven't upgraded to Edgy yet, I don't know the current status. I can try it again a few days later.

When it doesn't work, it seems like ignoring this environment variable and decoding the bytes using UTF-8, resulting garbages. Bug 57949 looks more like a UTF-16 problem than this.

Hey Alan. Is this still a problem in Edgy and Fiesty?

It still exists in edgy. I have no fiesty to try.

Don't know if this is related: IIRC, the bug appeared within 2 months after g++-4.0 ABI transition of libid3-3.8.3c2a.

Hey Alan - Once you have Feisty running, can you see if this problem exists in the "audacious" media player. audacious is the (sort-of) successor to beep. I found that a similar issue, described in bug 57949, was resolved with the audacious version present in Feisty.

Hi,
I'm closing this bug report because the beep-media-player package has been
removed from the archive.
BMP is now deprecated in favour of Audacious or BMPx (both are packaged and
available in the universe repository: audacious and bmpx).

Thanks,
