I still cannot launch firestarter from my jaunty menus even with 1.0.3-7ubuntu2 installed. Both the entry in Applications->Internet and System->Administration still have su-to-root as the exec line.

I have two firestarter.desktop files on my system, one right, one wrong:

paul@dobby:~$ locate firestarter.desktop | xargs grep -i exec
/usr/share/app-install/desktop/firestarter.desktop:Exec=gksu -X -c /usr/sbin/firestarter
/usr/share/applications/firestarter.desktop:Exec=su-to-root -X -c /usr/sbin/firestarter

Can confirm this bug using daily build 2009-03-21. Cannot start firestarter from either Jaunty Internet or Admistration menu, using firestarter (1.0.3-7ubuntu2).

The suggest fixed version (1.0.3-7ubuntu2) is still not working. I hope putting this back to confirmed is the correct thing to do. Also the package app-install-data installs a similarly broken .desktop file into /usr/share/app-install/desktop/.

Sorry, meant to add that both desktop files are now broken:

/usr/share/applications/firestarter.desktop:Exec=su-to-root -X -c /usr/sbin/firestarter

What errors are you guys getting? I suspect this is due to a missing dependency on the menu package. Can someone having this problem please post the output of

  dpkg -l menu | tail -1

Thanks in advance.

dpkg -l menu | tail -1 gives:
un menu <none> (no description available)

This is clearly the cause of the problem and I thought that this had already been stated above. However, I can't see it there so it is just as well you said! May be I am recalling the package suggestion when running the command from the command line. Anyhow, the solution that appears to be prefered is to replace the reference to su-to-root with the more usual gksu.

No, I'm going to fix the dependency. su-to-root is the more general choice that will work cross-DE.

Paul Broadhead (pjbroad) wrote :

Just an observation; many other programs already use gksu to get root access. Using gksu for firestarter would provide a consistent user interface experience across all these tools and save some disk space and download bandwidth also.

Uploading now. su-to-root is the way that Debian have chosen to go with this and it's better to try and reduce our divergence this way. Also for non-GNOME users this will provide a better user experience :).

Yes.
Furthermore, gksu ask to enter the password again when I want to put firestarter in my session start.
I prefere sudo because it can use the launching session password for launch firestarter.
Thank you for your work.

I have realised the update to 1.0.3-7ubuntu3 but firestarter ever can't be launched in the session start.
I have put "sudo firestarter" in the 'startup application' tool but it can't work.

I can confirm this update pulled in the menu package and the menu icon now works.
Thanks for the fix Iain.
