GDM starts. High CPU usage when scrolling (regardless of app, but very noticeable in Firefox - with/without desktop effects). Slight flickering when first starting. My main concern is the high CPU usage. Should I worry about these warnings and errors?

Hi ben-factsalive,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` too.

My Thinkpad X40 also suffers from this issue. It seems to actually be causing problems; every so often my screen will just go blank, and there is no way to fix it without a reboot. Things in the background still work fine - for example, if I'm watching a movie when it happens, the movie sound continues to play.

I also observe the same issue on my Thinkpad X40. The Intel driver version is 2.5.1 with mesa3d 7.2 and xorg 7.4. This is not on an Ubuntu system, which I think would indicate that the issue is not distribution specific, but rather indicates a bug in the driver.

Seem to have a similar issue on a Compaq M2031AP

The "screen suddenly goes blank" issue and the underruns are probably related, since the pipe will eventually just stop sending data if it gets too many underruns. This looks very similar to the issue in upstream https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19304, there's a patch available for testing in https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=24375.

Is this still an issue on Jaunty? We're putting a lot of effort into the -intel driver for the upcoming release, and we'd like to send your bug upstream if possible. But first, we need to collect more information. Please report whether the card works in Jaunty, and if not, give the new 2.7.0 driver a shot. It can be found here: https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/

Thanks!

Many thanks Andrew,
I've resolved my problems installing as new Jaunty! (without any other driver)
No problems also about a flickering noise opening firefox at first time: the new Jaunty seems very good and stable also for my very old Fuji Lifebook C 1020.
Bye, Dausto.

Glad to hear that, Dausto!

Can we get the fix confirmed by the original reporter as well? That would be ackdesha. Or if others using the 855gm card can confirm the fix we'll go ahead and close the bug. Thanks everyone for the help making Ubuntu even better.
