Bug Description

AMD64 3000+ on K8N4-E Delux motherboard

On Ubuntu-5.04 works perfectly (NFORCE-CK804 sound - snd-intel8x0)

On KUbuntu-dapper-install-amd64_20060212 - NO SOUND:

after kernel-2.6.14 - NO SOUND!!!
I suppose this problem is linked whith ALSA, becouse ALSA-1.0.2/4 - sound works perfect!! After 1.0.4 - NO SOUND!!

So for a recap on the Nforce ALSA + SPDIF optical + Ubuntu issue this thread is about, these are my (personal) results to date. As stated before, the Nvidia drivers are OSS only, not ALSA. Hopefully this will help anybody maximize performance with their hardware + Ubuntu configuration wishing to use ALSA and help avoid some troubleshooting time! Anybody else with feedback, please feel free to add to the list.

Ubuntu 5.04, Stock Audio drivers, 2.6.10-k7 kernel:
-OSS: Works
-ALSA Detection: Works
-ALSA Analog (0,0): Works
-ALSA SPDIF (0,2): No output

Ubuntu 5.04, NVIDIA Nforce 1.0-0306 drivers, 2.6.10-k7 kernel:
-OSS: Works
-ALSA Detection: Works
-ALSA Analog (0,0): Works
-ALSA SPDIF (0,2): Works (perfectly)

Ubuntu 5.10, Stock Audio drivers, 2.6.12-k7 kernel:
-OSS: Works
-ALSA Detection: Works
-ALSA Analog (0,0): Works
-ALSA SPDIF (0,2): Kinda works (requires toggling of IEC958 in alsamixer, very often)

Ubuntu 5.10, NVIDIA Nforce 1.0-0306 drivers, 2.6.12-k7 kernel:
-OSS: Works
-ALSA Detection: Does not work
-ALSA Analog (0,0): Does not work
-ALSA SPDIF (0,2): Does not work

Ubuntu 5.10, NVIDIA Nforce 1.0-0310 drivers, 2.6.12-k7 kernel:
-OSS: Works
-ALSA Detection: Does not work
-ALSA Analog (0,0): Does not work
-ALSA SPDIF (0,2): Does not work

Here is my /dev/sndstat output (Ubuntu 5.10, stock audio drivers, 2.6.12-k7 kernel)

Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.9 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux beer 2.6.12-10-k7 #1 Fri Nov 18 12:46:18 UTC 2005 i686
Config options: 0

Installed drivers:
Type 10: ALSA emulation

Card config:
NVidia nForce2 with ALC650F at 0xe2080000, irq 21

Audio devices:
0: NVidia nForce2 (DUPLEX)

Mixers:
0: Realtek ALC650F

apologies to contributor... I orig. copied notes to check my sys out, not sure where from.

Have Dapper 6.06 on with Xgl added and evrything from scanner to printer working well. Have been considering nForce-Linux-x86-1.0-301 pkg on my AMD 2600+ on A7N8X-E.
cheers

Have the same bug:

lspci | grep -i audio

0000:00:04.0 Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation CK804 AC'97 Audio Controller (rev a2)

cat /proc/asound/cards

0 [CK804 ]: NFORCE - NVidia CK804
                     NVidia CK804 with ALC850 at 0xd8103000, irq 225

But i can't select the soundcard unter system / preferences / audio...
