Bug Description

One of the last updates has broken my audio. When Ubuntu 8.10 boots up I get a period of white noise. As the boot up continue the noise stops. If I do the System>Sound Preferences>Device and then click the [test] I get the same white noise. The same when System>Sound>Sounds>Login I get the same white noise.

Both the PulseAudio Sound Server and ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture produce the white noise.

I have had the sound to work with Ubuntu 8.10 for awhile, but about 3 or 4 updates ago it was broken by the update.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in linux.

For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via the Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you are having an issue. You can learn more about this feature at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information.

Please include the information requested from the "Reporting Sound Bugs" section of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems as separate attachments.

Please describe the way to use the script in the referenced web page. The steps to use it with Unbutu 8.10, thanks.

Once I know how to use the script, I will run it and send the results to the launchpad.

I now get no sound at all.
I am not sure where to direct my energy on trying to correct this problem. It would be nice to have sound on this computer.

I have PulseAudio and I have no idea of how to set up and use it. Maybe that is the problem, I just don't know.

Some response would be appreciated. thanks

I have been trying the solutions on the Ubuntu forum, but I still do not have sound working.

How do I make sure the motherboard audio is default rather than the PCI audio card?

Hi John,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 330335

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

The new release has fixed the problem. (Although I think I got it working
before then, it's been) I apologize for not updating this bug report, it has
been some time and I had forgotten I had filed it. Thank you for your
concern.
