Bug Description

r818x does not support this realtek 8180 card, ndiswrapper does. Maybe it should be blacklisted?

Gabriele, can you please be more specific? So the developers can track faster what's the problem. Thanks.

Try to ask me specific questions (logs, tests, etc...) and I'll be happy to help developers solving this problem. You can contact me also on IRC net freenode, I'm the identified user no0tic, helping people in #ubuntu-it channel.

Ndiswrapper module shipped with build >= 14-k7 & ndiswrapper-utils-1.8 (needed by this kernel version) is not working with my realtek8180 based wireless card because it doesn't recognize WEP & WAP capabilities. Ndiswrapper module from 8-386 build & ndiswrapper-utils-1.5 is working with every network configuration.

You said it works with open networks, but not with wep/wpa ones. Do you have any log on those errors? Does this still happens with latest updates? Thanks!

well I found the problem. New kernel builds (from -14 on) ship r818x module for my wireless NIC but this module doesn't support well my card. r818x module & ndiswrapper were both loaded, giving problems. I unloaded r818x and modprobed only ndiswrapper and wireless is working fine now.
now... r818x was the problem, not ndiswrapper.

The problem with rtl8180 and ndiswrapper using wep is in /etc/network/interfaces. If you use the windows driver you need to set your key before the essid, and you need to specify what kinda authentication you have
In my interfaces file I need to set
wireless open key *******
wireless essid ******
Instead of
wireles essid ******
wireless key *****

r818x does not work under Ubuntu 7.04 either (Feisty Fawn). It scans well APs, but when I try to connect to mine, it simply does not. I cannot tell what the problem is ready syslog.

Using ndiswrapper on another laptop, I get it working, but only for 10 minutes, after which the card resets itself indefinitely and only a reboot can fix this.

But I successfully got this card working all the time using ndiswrapper under FC5, kernel 2.6.16-1.2122_FC5. Not even a more recent version of the FC5 kernel worked.

Guys, check https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/74672 That is the bug that prevented me to connect. When I manually perform:

iwconfig wlan0 essid <my essid>Z
iwconfig wlan0 mode Managed
iwconfig wlan0 key restriced <some hex key>
iwconfig
dhclient wlan0

...it works. Add an extra letter to your essid (Here I use "Z") and you might connect.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Now that the 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon release of Ubuntu is out, we were wondering if you can still reproduce this issue. Could you please download and try the new version of Ubuntu from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and report back your results. If the issue is still present in the new release, please attach the following information:

* uname -a > uname-a.log
* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
* dmesg > dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

Please be sure to attach each file as a separate attachment. For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy, please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help and feedback.
