ueagle-atm driver does not work

Bug Description

In the new kernel tree, the driver eagle-atm is replaced by
ueagle-atm. However, this driver is not installed in the ubuntu
kernel.

This makes the use of eagle based usd modems not possible
with ubuntu dapper.

To repairing this bug should not be hard because ueagle module
is in the kernel tree since some time.

It is possible to make the ueagle-atm driver work on ubuntu dapper using
the most recent svn version of the usbatm module. However, this new version is not included by default in dapper.

Not sure what you mean, eagle-usb exists in dapper:

/lib/modules/2.6.12-10-686/kernel/drivers/usb/misc/eagle-usb/eagle-usb.ko

The usbatm drivers are:

cxacru.ko speedtch.ko usbatm.ko xusbatm.ko

So maybe you are confusing module names.

Hi,

No, i am not confusing module names.
The driver eagle-usb is old fashioned and will n-o-t
be supported in the 2.6.15 and next kernels.

See
http://dev.eagle-usb.org/wakka.php?wiki=EagleUsb230
and
http://www.eagle-usb.org/article.php3?id_article=56

The right module to have is ueagle-usb and
not eagle-usb.

Please replace the bad module eagle-usb by
the right one ueagle-usb because a lot of
french (and other people use the eagle based modem).

I tried the ueagle driver from svn repository of ueagle site
and it works. If you need some help for configuration, please
ask me. I am not a kernel specialist but was able to make
the driver work on ubuntu dapper with 2.6.15 after some
work.

Yours,

Fred

I confirm that the driver eagle-usb is not the right one because it will be
out-of-date in the 2.6.15 kernel. The only supported driver is ueagle-usb,
so it should be used for eagle based modem under ubuntu.

I don't understand what you mean by "will not be supported" and "will be out-of-date" in 2.6.15. We are already running 2.6.15, and this driver is already there.

The real question is, does this driver work for you in our current kernel or not?

The driver eagle-usb does not work for me and i found other
people who did not manage to make it work on 2.6.15.

The driver ueagle-usb works very well, but i had to take the
more recent update on svn server of ueagle-usb.

Take a look at the following link

http://lea-linux.org/pho/read/4/285053

where the right links (those that allowed me to make
this driver work) can be found.

The main point is that one must install the ueagle-atm
and usbatm files from svn repository of ueagle-atm page
in order to have the most recent version.

you could take a look at my howto here:

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=144468&highlight=ueagle

apparently your mileage may vary.

I am not sure if these modems could be made to work out of the box due to firmware, but if ueagle-atm and a working usbatm module were in the dapper kernel (they should be in stock linux kernel from 2.6-16 anyway) it would be a lot easier.

The module eagle-usb d-o-e-s n-o-t w-o-r-k. It's a bug that is a real
problem
for ubuntu users because without internet, ubuntu can not even be
really installed (one needs updates). It should be marked as not
loadable in
modprobe.conf. In fact, it should be replaced by the new supported
ueagle-atm.

I am not the only one who had problems to install this one.
Why don't ubuntu simply remove eagle-usb (this needs to be done by
users in order to make ueagle-atm work) and make a patch
to the kernel modules with ueagle-usb, the last version on svn?
It works quite well and everyone that uses and develops this modem
agrees on
the fact that this is the right module to use with eagle based modems.

Fred

The two drivers are in conflict. One should stop using (disable)
eagle-usb and
use ueagle-atm (svn version on ueagle-atm site) instead.

You are the third person who changed the bug report but i have to change
it another time for the good sake of this modem's users.

Can you please backport this change into Ubuntu kernel?
This kernel module is really important for providing ADSL connection for many Polish users.

Hi,

Yes i know that ueagle-atm driver was accepted in mainline kernel.

I am not able to do this because i don't know how.
Can you do it yourself?

Workaround: add the eagle-usb to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist so that ueagle-atm works correctly.

Does the driver work well? When i was using it, it was
a bit buggy.

ueagle-atm works fine.
you only need to configure ppp with pppoa, for example in the file /etc/ppp/peers/provider (attachment)

and you need the user and password in the file /etc/ppp/chap-secrets in this format:

"user@adsl-company" * "password" *

where user@adsl-company is the same in /etc/ppp/peers/provider (first line)

$ sudo pon
for connection

$ sudo poff -a
for disconnect

pd: sorry my english :)

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'.
