Bug Description

When a control is only horizontal-scrollable, we should be able to sroll left/right using the mouse wheel. When a control is both horizontal- and vertical-scrollable, we should be able to scroll left/right using CTRL+mouse wheel (ala Inkscape).

I think you are going to have to give some steps to clarify this issue e.g.

1. Start applcation x.
2. Resize window.
etc.

1) Start gedit
2) Turn off "word wrap" from "edit" - "preferences
3) Type something really long so that a horizontal scrollbar appears
4) Position your mouse cursor on the text area
5) Move the mouse scroll wheel up/down

Problem: nothing happens!

Suggestion:
1) If a scrollable control only has a horizontal scrollbar, moving the mouse wheel should scroll horizontally
2) If a scrollable control has both horizontal and vertical scrollbar, moving the mouse wheel should scroll vertically BUT adding a modifier such as SHIFT should scroll horizontally (Inkspace uses SHIFT to scroll horizontally)

Looks like the thread died with any conclusion. I tried control or shift scroll in gedit on feisty but nothing happened. It would be great to standardize and implement.

The behavior is still the same in 7.04 final. By the way, in KDE we can scroll horizontally using a modifier key (I forgot whether it is CTRL or shift).

Horizontal scrolling using the mouse whell is possible with Gtk 3. I don't know about Gtk 2, but given that it is superseeded it is very very unlikely that it will see new features. Therefore, I'm closing this bug.
