In Kubuntu in the window settings the Translucent option checked slows down dramatic the performance and reaction of the whole system. Some actions even not seems to work. this is on drapper flight 5 with the latest Nvidia driver installed and updates.

Did you edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf as described in the wiki and on the forums?
Does the translucency work, although your system is slow?

My problem with the composite manager has been that it crashes X once a day or so.

The translucency overall worked but the reaction time of the
whole system is so slow that it is not usable. With the same
entries in the xorg on PCLinuxOS 0.92 I don't have these problems.
Also the frame of a window should be translucent. Sometimes
it is, sometimes not. The smooth pop up of the windows, as an
behavior is not really working. Under PCLinux OS it works, as I have
it installed on another partition, so that I can compare. I had so far
no crashes, but it was so slow that I turned it of. It could be that the
translucent issues are a result of the whole sytem slow down.

Please provide more information, such as the type of graphic card, and pasting the relevant part of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf seems like a good idea too. Also you say that under PCLinuxOS 0.92, you say you have no such problem, but just later in your reply, you say that under PCLinuxOS, it was so slow you had to deactivate it. I think you need to rephrase that a bit.
