Bug Description

Edit -> Preferences, Privacy. The "Settings" button is mostly obscured and other buttons on the various tabbed windows are partially obscured.

Confirmed on a second PC. Screenshot to be attached.

Version: 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.1-1ubuntu6 (Dapper Flight 5)

Your fonts looks different than mine. Did you changed them?

Yes Alexandre you're right. No change to the actual fonts but sizes been changed from 10pt to 9pt for all entries in System -> Preferences Font.

According to the changelog this bug was solved in firefox 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.1-1ubuntu11:
  * Make Preferences window not chop off various elements:
    - specify a width of 50em instead of 42em
    - do not specify a height
    - add another <separator/> to the bottom of privacy.xul's prefpane.
I have no idea why this is necessary :-(.
    Malone 36985.

But I'm still experiencing this bug using dapper 20060422 and 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.1-1ubuntu12.
The "Settings" button under Edit -> Preferences, Privacy is completely invisible. No vertical scrollbar is shown so this button can not be noticed. See screenshot in attachment.
It is possible to manually resize the Preferences window to make the "Settings" button visible but closing and reopening the Preferences window makes it invisible again.
Important to notice is that I'm using a different Application font under System -> Preferences -> Font. The font I'm using is Verdana 8pt from msttcorefonts.
With the default Ubuntu Application font "Bitstream Vera Sans 10pt" or "Sans 10pt" I'm not experiencing this, then all elements in the Preferences window are shown and the "Settings" button is visible.

I think that in 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.2-0ubuntu2 I have made all of the dialogue boxes fit their contents. If not, please file another bug.

Ubuntu users reported that various of the dialogues and windows accessible from Edit / Preferences were too small for their contents. I was able to reproduce this with a fresh profile from the Ubuntu build.

Note that Ubuntu's firefox generally uses pango for most of its font rendering, which might have an effect on the overall layout.

I have gone through all of the dialogue boxes which were insufficiently large and changed the sizes in our version, and will attach the corresponding patch to this report after I have filed it.

However, the system strikes me as fragile. Some of the dialogue boxes have sizes in ems, at least, rather than pixels, but even then changes to the content seem not to be reliably reflected in dialogue size changes. Surely there should be some kind of automatic sizing mechanism which would avoid these kind of problems ?

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
For example, in Ubuntu 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.2-0ubuntu1, select
 Edit / Preferences ... / Connection Settings ...
and observe that the RHS of the dialogue contents are off the RHS of the dialogue box.

patch to increase sizes of various dialogues

Patch as I said I'd attach. Note that I consider this kind of change to be a workaround rather than an actual fix, as discussed.

WFM, and I'm built with Pango enabled. This might be a Ubuntu-specific bug.

comment 6 and 8 seems to indicate this was a Ubuntu theme problem.
