Bug Description
when opening the dialog box, focus is not within the text area. I have to click with the mouse to put it inside the dialog box.

I can confirm the mentioned behaviour. Furthermore, if you type any alphanumeric key, it is used as first letter of the password. The gnome-screensaver is consistent in this way and the question is, if this is desired beahviour or not. In my opinion it would be more convinient to show the password dialog at first and allow typing only after showing it.
