Bug Description

Fresh installation of Karmic Koala in both Ubuntu and Xubuntu have menu items for "HPLJ 10xx Replaced Paper" which is created by /usr/share/applications/hplj1020.desktop file. This menu item should only be generated for those who own an HP LaserJet 1020, not all users. It is an extra process for users to have to remove this menu item.

Please remember Karmic is in Alpha release, so this menu item might not remain in the final release.

For further info about papercuts criteria , pls read > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as "invalid" ONLY in the papercuts project.

Reassigning to foo2zjs, as that is the package containing the desktop file in question.

NB this bug is distinct from bug 398959 which is about the poor naming, whereas this bug is about the presence of a highly device-specific menu item which may often be unwanted.

affects: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) → foo2zjs (Ubuntu)

This device-specific entry should obviously not show up in a default installation. Furthermore, it uses the "System Tools" menu which should not be used at all in Ubuntu.

Sorry, can you tell me why this doesn't count as a papercut? As far as I see it meets all the criteria:

    * A bug, or an unintended problem occurring within an existing piece of software,
    * the presence of which makes a computer more difficult or less pleasant to use,
    * that is easy to fix,
    * that the average user would encounter during his/her first day of using...
    * ...Ubuntu Desktop Edition* as configured by a default installation.

Why this is *Not* a papercut, is because menu items like these often pop-up during alpha or beta releases, these are bugs common in alpha/beta .

If bugs such as these are to be included as papercuts, then every minor bug in alpha/beta release would be a papercut! that would not be helpful in anyway.

An average user would only use the final candidate or the more adventurous would the release candidate. so it really wouldnt affect the average user. unless it is in the papercuts.

Further , i dont think the devs intended for that option to be shown for all. This is just a bug in the alpha.

If this menu item exists in the RC then , this would definitely be a papercut.

This should be something taken care of by an extra package like hplip and should not be on a default installation as most users do not own HP printers.

Just marked two bugs as duplicate reports of this issue. Requesting this change be made before the beta is released.

Oops, that was a typo and should say bug 398958.
