What's the need? Just grep the messages!

the label displayed there is "Key to choose 3rd level"

OK, it seems that not all the messages for gnome-keyboard-properties are in the source package of gnome-control-center, I don't understand either.

I tried to get a screenshot using gnome-screenshot, but as soon as the focus is removed from the gnome-keyboard-properties window, the pane with the loing list of layout switches in moves back to the top, and the string I mentioned is hidden.

So to help, the string I mentioned is in the Layouts tab, under "Miscellaneous compatability options".

There's another typo in the same long list: under "Key to choose 3rd level", the entry "Press Enter key on keypad to choose 3rd level." should not have the period at the end.

I still think that asking users to provide screenshots of strings is a waste of time on both sides; you must know where the strings come from, and easily be able to search them!

Sorry, when I said "on the Layouts tab", I meant "in the Layout Options... dialog accessed from the Layouts tab".

No. "Key to choose 3rd level" is a section heading, as mentioned above. The two incorrect entries are under various section headings, as I already explained.

Sorry, my last note above was written in response to receiving the third entry above as an email; Launchpad was out of sync with my email, which confused me.

if you were giving the exact string it could be easier to look for it indeed

Look:

$grep "chooses 3d level instead" /etc/X11/xkb/base.xml
<description>Shift does not cancel NumLock, chooses 3d level instead</description>

I've found the string before reassigning, your original description was just not clear not describing where in the capplet the string was nor giving the complete string

I shouldn't need to describe where it is or give the complete string, normally, as the string in most packages will be somewhere in the source package (most typos are in documentation such as READMEs or man pages or HTML pages which come from the package which presents the bug). What I didn't realise was that in this case the string didn't come from the source package, so sorry about that.
