bug: 402866 title: "Search using Google" goes to Custom Search and new tabs go to the Ubuntu Google Start Page date-reported: Wed, 22 Jul 2009 05:03:01 -0000 date-updated: Fri, 07 Aug 2009 12:14:35 -0000 reporter: Michael Maltese (dimalta) duplicate-of: 402767 duplicates: attachments: patches: tags: subscribers: Michael Maltese (dimalta) Micah Gersten (micahg) Vincenzo Ciancia (vincenzo-ml) task: firefox-3.0 (Ubuntu) status: Confirmed date-created: Wed, 22 Jul 2009 05:03:01 -0000 date-left-new: Wed, 22 Jul 2009 17:01:47 -0000 date-confirmed: Wed, 22 Jul 2009 17:01:47 -0000 reporter: Michael Maltese (dimalta) importance: Undecided component: main assignee: milestone: Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="===============1480484915734354536==" MIME-Version: 1.0 --===============1480484915734354536== Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable WHAT. THE. FUCK. I just upgraded to firefox version 3.0.11+build2+nobinonly-0ubuntu2.me001 on karmic. When I try to use the search bar in the upper right-hand corner to search G= oogle, it instead takes me to a Google Custom Search for "9.10 Alpha 3 Expe= riment B." I have no option to change this back to the generic Google page,= and the generic Google search is not available for download (one can only = download Google search for individual languages, presumably because it NORM= ALLY comes preinstalled). Also, any new tabs I open, instead of being blank or going to my set homepa= ge (which is "about:blank"), go to "chrome://me001/content/text.html", agai= n without giving me any option to change this. What the fuck Ubuntu. Whatever asshole thought this was a good idea needs to put it back the way it was. I use your operating system because I want to get away from invasive marketing shit. Is this what free-as- in-speech software is about? --===============1480484915734354536== Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Author: Michael McKinley (m-mckinley) Date: Wed, 22 Jul 2009 07:07:02 -0000 Message-Id: <20090722070702.14106.36112.malone@potassium.ubuntu.com> I noticed this too and was annoyed. A workaround is to disable/remove the Multisearch extension. --===============1480484915734354536== Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Author: Stefan Hamminga (stefanhamminga) Date: Wed, 22 Jul 2009 12:00:35 -0000 Message-Id: <20090722120036.13955.84456.malone@potassium.ubuntu.com> Another confirm here, this is indeed high on my 'not done' list, right up there with apple and microsoft... Please at least give users advance notice before doing stuff like this AND give the user the option to 'opt out'. --===============1480484915734354536== Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Author: Michael Maltese (dimalta) Date: Wed, 22 Jul 2009 15:46:17 -0000 Message-Id: <20090722154617.20877.90602.malone@gangotri.canonical.com> Thanks Michael, disabling Multisearch fixed it. They need to make it easier to figure that out, though; I didn't even know = I had the Multisearch (presumably installed on upgrade without telling me?). --===============1480484915734354536== Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Author: Jeffrey Baker (jwbaker) Date: Wed, 22 Jul 2009 17:01:00 -0000 Message-Id: <20090722170100.13955.32941.malone@potassium.ubuntu.com> This is horrifying, not just because of the adverts at the top, but also because the custom search is not anywhere near as useful as the normal google search page. The custom search doesn't make links to maps, finance, scholar, etc. It only has main index results and, of course, a ton of adverts. --===============1480484915734354536== Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Author: Micah Gersten (micahg) Date: Thu, 23 Jul 2009 02:31:15 -0000 Message-Id: <20090723023117.9136.75240.malone@gangotri.canonical.com> Thank you for your bug report. Having quick-search use the custom search with no images, etc. options, and defaulting to "Ubuntu" instead of "web" was not a fun experience. --===============1480484915734354536==--
