Bug Description

When I started the dapper beta liveCD I didn't have my wireless network setup automatically, but it was available in the System->Admin->Networking tool. When I rebooted into my installed system it was no longer there. modprobe ath_pci gave an error. modprobe ath_hal said that ath_hal wasn't found, even though it was in /lib/linux-restricted-modules/2.6.15-20-386/ath_hal/ath_hal.mod.o

I had to reboot into the liveCD and apt-get install -d the 686 version and copy it to my local drive so I could have wireless internet.

i386 kernel modules are of no use when you are running a 686 kernel. This sounds like a bug in whatever chose the packages to go on to your system. What did you use to do the hard disk install and did you manually switch to an i686 kernel?

I must not have been clear. When I loaded up the liveCD I was able to use my
ath wireless card. When I bootted into my HD installation (which used the
386 kernel) I couldn't load ath_hal from a terminal -- though it was in the
directory loaded. I used the liveCD to get the 686 kernel and restricted
modules debs so I could install them.

I wasn't trying to use mismatched modules/kernels.

I used the espresso installer. And I had to manually switch to the 686
kernel.

Is this any better with a -23 kernel?

I have no installed the system from a liveCD since then. Once I do I will see how the default kernel that is installed performs.

I just installed the RC liveCD. All's well that ends well.
