Bug Description

Ubuntu 9.04 w/ the latest Thunderbird 2.0.0.22 from the repo.

I installed the libnotify-mozilla 0.1.2 xpi in Tbird and tested it with the send test notification button from the preferences. The test notification popped up.

However, when I receive a new mail, the old Tbird notification appears, but no libnotify notification appears.

EDIT: See comment #3 for the corrected description of the problem.

Thank you for reporting this bug. I was however unable to confirm it with Thunderbird 2.0.0.22 and the latest xpi (0.1.2).
Could you please try to disable the default Thunderbird notification and see if that works? Also, note that there is a little timeout before the notification shows up. If it all doesn't work, please report back here.

I unchecked the Preferences General tab "Show an alert", and I now get alerts*. Hopefully in a future release this can be fixed, because it is counter-intuitive for lay users to uncheck "Show an alert" in order to see the libnotify alerts. The libnotify plugin should respect that preference, and disable the old notification system when the libnotify plugin is installed.

*I noted that the libnotify alert does not seem to appear for new emails received when Tbird is first opened. This is inconsistent and confusing, and is what caused me to assume libnotify alerts were not working and file this bug.

Anyway, keep up the good work! It does look good when it works.

An update: The libnotify plugin *does* work regardless of the "Show an alert" check box. If that is checked, then the old alert shows, and after it disappears, the new libnotify alert shows. (I still think the libnotify alert should disable the old alert, and respect the setting of that check box.)

So really the only thing about this bug that remains valid is that the libnotify alert does not appear for new messages that are downloaded when Tbird is first opened.

I got the things working by enabling "Show host name on new message". After that libnotify works as expected. Once it works, you can disable "Show host name on new message".

How can I get the changed version? For me it's still not working. Disabled Tbird new message and enabled also the show hostname. Testing is working, but whenever I get a new mail I don't get notified

You can get my code via my branch: bzr branch lp:~ruben-verweij/libnotify-mozilla/devel. (just type it in a terminal, install bzr if it isn't already)
The maintainer of this plugin is a bit slow to respond and hasn't merged my changes yet. So, until he merges the changes, you can't download the fix in another way.

Hi Ruben,

Yes, I'm slow to respond because I'm working on other stuff. I suggest
you take the lead on this project I you seams to be responsive. On my
side I'm welling to test anything you do.
You should be able to do anything you want in launchpad including
merging and publishing.

The only thing you can't do currently is publishing the addons on
https://addons.mozilla.org. It's can be easily resolve if you register
you're self. Than I will be able to add you as a developper of the addon.

Regards,

Patrik Dufresne

Hi Patrik,

I hope I didn't offend you, but this has become kind of a hobby project
for me. ;-)
Okay, I'm happy to continue this project.

Ruben
