Bug Description

Windows are not got properly in the foreground.

It's a generally problem with all windows. (programm independently)

When i start a programm, then it should be go to the foreground. But this not always does it. The first click on a this window in the background, does not put it to the foreground. But the window is activated.

If i move a background window, then the window goes to the foreground, always!

Maybe it also lies in nvidia driver? I use nvidia-glx v1.0.8756+2.6.15.9-3 from restricted section.

Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package 'gnome-desktop'; however, that package was not published in Ubuntu.

thanks for the bug report.

this sounds like it could be a feauture called "Focus stealing prevention" or possibly a bug in gksu

please can read Bug #41623 and Bug #31487 and check that it is neither of those.

I am not sure. I do not believe something with the bugs has to act. Maybe indirectly.

With me it is different a little bit. It is about the fact which I click actively with the mouse another window and it does not come in foreground.

The window title is ordinarily gray, if the window is in the background. In the foreground, the title is colored.
If i click on a window in the background, the title change from gray to colored, but it does not come in the foreground, sometimes. Sometimes even seldom.

possibly some window switching mode setting is messed up.
could you run
gconftool --dump /apps/metacity/general > metacity-gconf
and attach the file metacity-gconf that it creates

gconftool -a /apps/metacity/general > metacity-gconf

it makes nicer output

thanks. i cant see anything obviously wrong with that (ie it looks the same as mine).

i'll have to leave this for the metacity devs.

Thanks for your bug. That's not likely to be a window manager but rather an application bug or a feature. Could you describe what you do exactly and what happens and what you would expect? The feature is used so if you are typing a password or some text to an application a new window doesn't steal your keyboard and make you type them to the wrong place. A window get placed to the foreground if the window is runned due to an user action (clicked on an icon by example) and you don't act to an another program during the startup. If you are typing an email, start openoffice which takes 10 seconds to startup and switching back to your email during those 10 secondes the window will open behind your mailer to not stop what you are doing, that's a feature

Dapper Beta

- Start Firefox
- Start Synaptic Package Manager

The Synaptic Package Manager window opens behind Firefox.

- Start Synaptic Package Manager
- Start Terminal

The Terminal window opens in front of Synaptic Package Manager.

The common theme here is applications that require administrator privs are starting up behind applications that run under normal user privs.

That's a known gksu issue being worked and duplicate of bug #31487

I note the comments above regarding Focus Stealing Prevention. However, take Firefox out of the equation.

- Start Terminal
- Start Synaptic Package Manager

Synaptic Package Manager starts behind Terminal.

If I start Terminal and then About Me, the About Me window is opened in front correctly.

It seems it is only administrative programs that open behind.

No, it's not only the gksu issue!

I have the follow Windows open:

- SciTE
- nautilus
- Firefox
- Terminal
- synaptic

If i switch between there windows randomly (normal click on the windows), then it comes to the errors. But seldom and not only with certain apps. Not only with gksu apps. It seems to be a not reproduceable error.

"then it comes to the errors", what errors, you didn't describe them previously. What focus mode do you use? Where do you click on the window?

With "errors" i mean, that the clicked window does not go from the background to the foreground.

I use the default "focus mode"...
