Bug Description

Binary package hint: evince

When I try to print a page from a PDF file using the document viewer all indications are normal. The printer's diagnostic display shows that a print job was received but nothing happens. I can print Unbuntu test pages just fine. The printer is an HP Laserjet 4+ with a jetdirect networking card using TCP/IP protocol. The printer has a postscript memory module installed and Unbuntu is using the postscript driver.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/evince
Package: evince 2.26.1-0ubuntu1
ProcEnviron:
 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: evince
Uname: Linux 2.6.28-15-generic i686

Thanks for your bug report.
Does this problem only occur in Document Viewer (evince) or also in e.g. gedit?
Please run the following command on a terminal for some usefull printing related information:
apport-collect -p cups 422949
Also provide your cups error_log after trying to print from evince as described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems#CUPS%20error_log

I was able to print a test page between 2 failed pages from the PDF. I was trying to determine if the printer was jammed. The printer has a diagnostic display and when Ubuntu sends a print job the display shows the job number, user name and as many characters of the document name that will fit. This tells me at least part of the job is getting there. There are no errors reported by Document Viewer or Ubuntu during one of these failures the printer simply doesn't print.

When I think about it the problem may be due to age. The Laserjet 4+ is an old printer with an old version of Post Script. What I thought was unusual is the Post Script module. When I went looking for a PS cartridge (it has a slot for font cartridges) I was surprised to find that it was a memory module. I had to take out one of the SIMM RAM chips to put in the PS module. Unfortunately the printer's diagnostic page doesn't report the PS version only its part number 19931105.

I got the thing working this morning by switching the driver to the Laserjet Foomatic driver instead of the PS driver. Disappointing :(

I can confirm the same problem in both evince/document viewer 2.26.1 and firefox--only one page of multipage documents will print.

apport fails as follows, although I did allow "change anything":
