Fn + F4 should suspend the laptop

Suspend does work from the logout menu. I am using dapper flight 6 + all updates.

What is the sleep button set to do in the power preferences?

There's several parts to this;

  a) Whether we can detect the the keypress
  b) Whether the software stack (eg. gnome-power-manager) knows what to do with it
  c) Whether your laptop actually Suspends successfully.

Can you include the output from running:

  lshal -m

and we can see if the action is getting that far. You can test the Suspend manually from a console by running:

  sudo pmi action suspend

On my laptop in Edgy, I can not find any "sleep button" setting. Only in gconf-editor I can see that sleep_button_action is set to nothing. Sleep is enabled in /etc/default/acpi-support. Sleep from the menu works.

This was fixed for me in:
 gnome-power-manager (2.16.1-0ubuntu3) edgy; urgency=low
 .
   * make sure the /apps/gnome-power-manager/action_button_suspend key is
    set to "suspend". (closes malone #63303)

Justin, please reopen the bug if you still have problems (using Edgy).

I still get nothing when I press these buttons even though that gconf key is
set. Can we leave this bug open? I am using edgy

I just installed feisty herd3 and this is still not setup properly by default. the Fn+F4 button should suspend the laptop but it does nothing. When choosing suspend from the logout menu suspend works perfectly.

lshal -m

and attach the output, to make sure we are seeing the FN-F4 action. Thanks!

Pressing suspend and closing the lid caused the laptop to suspend properly. Pressing Fn+F4 did absolutely nothing and caused no output to appear from lshal -m.

Justin, please update the report with the output of the following commands:

uname -a

sudo lspci -vv

sudo lspci -vvn

sudo dmidecode

The output of uname can be include in-line. The output of the other commands should be attached to the report, one attachment per command (please do not include inline, and please do not compress the attachments). Please be sure to use sudo, root privileges are necessary to get the required information.

Once we have this, we can direct and assign appropriately. Thanks!
